Brussels PeeWee Boys split last 2 It was hard-hitting and high scores when the Blyth Blue Jay Tykes took on four opponents dur- ing the first week and a half of July. Blyth took to the field in Bay- field, July 3, in a very close and exciting game. All the players did their best hitting and fielding. The win was secured in the last inning when Jenna Rinn forced an out at second and Darcey Cook contributed to the other two outs. The final score was 20-18 for Birth. The following day, Blyth took their bats to Holmesville. Big hits by Brittney Peters, Mary Thompson, Kendall Whitfield and Anthony Peters helped the team to continue their winning streak. The squad suffered the first loss in nine games when Holmesville visited, July 10. Determined to retaliate for their earlier loss, Holmesville was able to keep the Blyth bats quieter for the first three innings. However, the home- town squad took the 23-18 loss. Brussels squad squeezes out win in Elma The Brussels Squirts Team II won a close one against Elma on July 9. The Brussels squad travelled to Elma and came home with a 2-1 victory. Scoring for Brussels were Matthew White and Eric Van Veen. Goaltending duties were split by Scott Phillips and White. After losing a somewhat interesting game to Ethel last week, the Brussels PeeWee boys split their next two contests. On Wednesday night they played host to Atwood, and came away with an exciting 8-5 victory. After the visitors jumped to an early 1-0 lead, Brussels responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second. Atwood came back with four runs of their own in the third. In the The Brussels Bul'clogs visited the Lieury Jets Wednesday night in Huron County Fastball action. In the first inning Andrew McCutcheon reached base on a single, but was left stranded. The Jets scored three runs to lead 3 - 0. Mike Watson started off the second inning with a single. Brent Whitmore reached base on a single then Dwain Nichols hit a double to bring him home. The Jets scored one run on three hits and left two stranded to end the second inning, then scored another three runs in the fourth. Greg Mulvey started the fifth with a single, stole second then came home on a John Miners' single. The last two innings were scoreless as the Jets held their 7 - 2 score for the win. McCutcheon and Jerry Bremner went two for two at the plate and Watson and McCutcheon shared pitching duties. Sunday night the Bulldogs hosted the Zurich Panthers. The home team started off the scoring in the first with Mulvey hitting a single, Brussels two Bantam soccer teams got together last Wednesday night to defeat Wingham 7-2. In a friendly contest Brussels' B and Acre T got together to defeat the Wingham team. - Adam Can of Brussels opened the scoring. Terry Brown increased the lead with a goal. Carr got a second goal before retiring to be keeper at half time. Bronwyn Dunbar scored for Brussels on a pass from Brown, who then scored his second goal of the game. John Martin of Wingham tried to get his team back in the contest by scoring Wingham's first goal, but Brussels' Kirk Baillie countered with a goal. Both coaches also played and Elias Valdez scored Wingham's other goal. Acre T coach Mike Cronin played, both as keeper for Wingham in the second half, plus as a fullback for his own side. In the darkness of the final minute of the game Phil Graber scored Brussels' last goal. On Thursday night-Brussels B Bantam team handed Palmerston a 4-2 loss. Brussels showed its superiority in all areas. Brown carried the ball through the Palmerston team to score the first goal. In a good display of passing in front of the Palmerston net Terry Nichol scored, then with a hard shot, from a difficult angle Brown scored. The Brussels keeper Pat Brown top of the fourth, Brussels's Philip Leger, playing his first inning of the season at shortstop, teamed up with first baseman Matthew Elliott to turn an impressive double play. After Brussels tied the game in the fourth, they took the lead by scoring three runs in the sixth. The defense held on in the seventh to save the victory. Brian Oldfield pitched admirably for the home side, scattering four strikeouts and five walks. Brussels runs were scored by then Watson hit him home with a double. Watson also crossed the plate when Nichols into a fielder's choice. The Panthers scored five runs on eight hits in the next three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs' bats came alive. Brian McArter started off with a single, then Dean Rutledge doubled and Whitmore him them home with his double. The next two batters, Mulvey and Watson, took walks then crossed home on McCut- cheon's head first dive into third triple. McCutcheon came home when Nichols singled. The Panthers scored on a one-run homerun in the fifth inning, then were shut down in the sixth and seventh inning. The Bulldogs coasted to an 8-6 victory. Watson pitched a complete game. Mulvey, Rutledge and Bruce Johnston went two for three at the plate. With the score 6-2 entering the third inning, the Brussels defense faltered and allowed Seaforth to score 11 runs. In the final inning, the gap proved too much to close. After Chris Coulter walked, Gropp stroked a grounder through the right fielder's legs, and both runners came home. Todd, Armstrong, Kroll and Dan Cameron, a squirt call-up, scored the rest of the Brussels runs. Mark Kroll, playing in his first game back from holidays, pitched well in the tough loss.
