Throwing the shoes
Warm Sunday weather brought out a lot of competitors and observers alike to the Brussels
Optimists' funfest. This year, held as a one day event, friends and neighbours created team
to compete in baseball, volleyball and horseshoes. The team with the most accumulated

Former reeve dies
It was a narrow escape for nine
area youths last week, involved in a
single vehicle accident in Grey
Twp. last Tuesday, July 9.
According to Const. John Mar-
shall of the Goderich OPP, a GMC
pickup truck, carrying three teens
in the front and six in the rear left
the roadway while driving down
Conc. 9 at 8:35 p.m. The truck
spun around into a ditch and trav-
ailed about 72 metres before it

lances were dispatched to the
scene.
Five teens, who were riding in
the back were taken to Wingham
Hospital, Marshall said. Mike
Comeau, 14, of Brussels was treat-
ed for abrasions. Victor Buchanan,
17 of Wingham sustained a broken
left arm. Shannon Ortnms, 16 of
Brussels had injuribihis left
knee. Joey Dillon, treated
for neck injuries, whi,Pe- Amanda

hurt.
The OPP called in the canine unit
when they were unable to find the
driver of the truck, 17-year-old
David Glugg of East Wawanosh,
Marshall said. There was a concern
that he had been thrown from the
truck and was lying injured. The
Emergency Rescue Team (ERT)
also came to assist in the search.
Marshall said, Gugg, who had
fled the scene, was found later near
Molesworth. He was taken to Lis-
towel Hospital at approximately
1:16 a.m.
Police report there was no.alco-
hol found at the scene.
Brussels lost one of its community
leaders this week.
John Calvin Krauter passed away,
Friday, July 12, 1996, at Wingham
and District Hospital, in his 83rd
year.
Mr. Krauter was a faithful
member of Melville Presbyterian
Church, Brussels, St.
John's Lodge #284 A.F
& A.M., Brussels, past
District Deputy Grand
Master, Chapter #84,
Wingham, Scottish Rite
and Shrine Mocha
Temple. He was a
member of Brussels
Royal Canadian Legion,
Branch 218 and a member of the
original pipe band.
During World War II, he served
with the Royal Canadian Navy on
the Corvette Trail.
After the war, he worked a short
time in Hamilton, then set up his
own heating and plumbing business
in Brussels.
Mr. Krauter was the reeve of
Brussels for 15 years and served as
the county warden in 1968.
He retired from his business in
1985.
He was the dearly beloved
husband and best friend of
Marguerite E. (Lester) for 51 years,
the loved father of Lt. Col. David
The hazards of farming were
brought home to one local man,
July 15, when he was trapped
beneath a large hay bale.
Ernie Bonsma, 55, of Lot 31,
Conc. 5, Grey Twp., was moving
five foot by four foot bales Monday
afternoon when one rolled back-
wards off the loader of his tractor
landing on him, says Community

second exhibit of the season, is
now open in the Bainton Gallery at
the Blyth Festival.

taken to a London hospital after an
accident on July 13.
Const. John Marshall, Communi-
ty Services Officer for the Ontario
Provincial Police said that Robert J.
Lane, 23, sustained serious injuries
and his wife, Lynne of Nepean,
Ontario and Kathleen Wilson and
her husband, Joseph of Ilderton,
Ontario. He is lovingly remembered
by grandchildren, Blair and Kendra
Krauter and Jessica, Lucas and
Rebecca Wilson.
Mr. Krauter was the dear brother
of Kenneth and his wife,
Emmaline and one sister,
Muriel, all of Ottawa.
He was predeceased by
his parents, John and
Marion Krauter of Ethel,
one brother, Gordon of
Windsor and four sisters,
Joyce, Dorothy, Elsie and
Edythe, all of Ethel.
The funeral service was held at
Melville Presbyterian Church,
Brussels on Monday, July 15. Rev.
Cathrine Campbell officiated.
Pallbearers were Doug Davidson,.
Bruce Raymond, Lloyd Smith,
Donald Dunbar, Jim Armstrong, Jim
Bowman and Jim Knight.
Interment was at Brussels
Cemetery.
In remembrance, donations to the
Access Fund of Melville
Presbyterian Church, would be
appreciated.
St. John's Masonic Lodge
conducted a memorial service
Sunday evening, followed by a
Royal Canadian Legion service.
An ambulance and the Grey
Twp. Fire Department attended.
Bonsma remained conscious
throughout the time the bale was
being removed, taken to Listowel
Memorial Hospital and later trans-
ferred to a London facility.
No further details regarding
injuries were available except that
Bonsma had no feeling in his legs
at the time of his transfer to the
ambulance.
