THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 1996 S ports Edging away The Newton Tigers didn't come on with a roar, but they did squeak out a 1-0 victory when they challenged the Brussels U-9 Team II on home turf last week. Brussels PeeWees win 1, lose 2 The windup Brussels Bulldogs pitcher Dave Smith winds up for the pitch during this contest in Brussels on Sunday evening against Seaforth. The game ended in a 7-all tie. Good 7th inning not enough for Bulldogs to take the win On Wednesday night the Bulldogs travelled to Zurich to take on the Rangers in the Huron County Fastball League. The Rangers took the lead scoring one run in the first inning. John Miners singled to start off :he second inning and was helped around the bases by Mike McDonald, Bruce Johnston and Dean Rutledge to tie the game at one run each. Zurich came back to score in the third, fourth and fifth innings to lead 6 - I going into the seventh. The Bulldogs came out hitting in the seventh with Rutledge, Andrew McCutcheon, Greg Wheeler, Dwain Nichols and Mike Watson all getting on base with hits but only four runners crossed the plate giving the Rangers a 6 to 5 win. Sunday night Seaforth visited the Bulldogs for an action packed game. The Bulldogs got things rolling in the third inning when, with two out, Greg Mulvey and On June 16 the Tigers scored five runs in their last at bat for a 5-0 win in Belgrave. Friday night in Brussels the Tigers again scored five runs in their last at bat enroute to a 10-4 win over the Blue Devils. A Tiger two-week layoff was obvious as Belgrave threatened early, loading the bases on a walk, an error, and a bunt. However two strikeouts and an easy fly ball to first base ended the rally. Belgrave opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth, but the Tigers replied quickly, tying the score on Doug Shaw's two RBI single. Belgrave regained the lead in the fifth, but again the Tigers replied Brian IvIcArter hit singles and Rutledge hit them home with his triple. McCutcheon took his base on a wild pitch and Miners cleared the bases with a home run. Dave Smith singled on and was hit home by Wheeler's triple. When the dust cleared, the Bulldogs led by six. Seaforth scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning and left two on base. Mulvey led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk then was hit home when Rutledge singled. With Seaforth down 7 - 2 they came out hitting and with the help of Bulldog errors Seaforth scored three unearned runs in the fifth, one unearned and one earned run in the sixth and were finally shut down in the seventh. The Bulldogs only offense was two base runners in the last three innings, leaving the score tied at 7. The Bulldogs travel to battle the Lieury Jets Wednesday and are back home Sunday at 7:30 against Zurich Panthers. with a two out two RBI single by Gary Pipe, who then scored on a Brett Clarkson single. The Blue Devils closed to within one in their sixth at bat but with two out the Tigers scaled the win on a Greg Fritz two RBI triple and a pinch hit home run by Jeff Earl. Doug Conley and Todd Uhrig shared the pitching giving up eight hits and striking out nine. Keith Todd went the distance for Belgrave while hitting two for three. The Tigers arc at home Friday night to Zurich, then travel to Lieury Sunday. 'Saturday night the Walton Brewers arrive in town to meet the Tigers as an opening to the Optimist Funfcst. The Brussels PeeWee boys have notched one win and two losses in their last three games. On June 25, the boys put out their best effort of the season and defeated Wingham in an exciting 4- 3 contest. Nathan Garland provided most of the Brussels offense, hitting a double and a triple and earning three RBIs. An additional RBI was credited to Mark Kroll. Brussels runs were scored by Andy Van Beek, Stephen Todd, Matt McCall and Brian Oldfield. On Tuesday, July 2 they lost 10-5 to Atwood. The game started off In Brussels Soccer action Acre T had an impressive first half running up a 3-0 lead over rival Brussels B. Dereck Terpstra opened the scoring for Acre T. He was able to capitalize on a scrambled defense in front of the Brussels net. Acre T kept up the pressure and Josh Beuermann drew a penalty in the area. On the penalty kick -Rich Terpstra booted a low grounder into the left corner. Sandy Rijkhoff of Acre T scored the third goal on a sliding kick. Brussels13 was kept in their end most of the half., Krissy Dilworth's debut as the Acre T keeper was solid and she easily handled the sporadic Brussels B attack. At the other end, the first change came when newcomer Pat Brown became the Brussels B keeper. His aggressive play kept the ball well away from the net. At the half Brussels B started to play. Matthew Aldaz scored Brussels U-9s win In helping to win their second game in a week, Justin Mayne of the Brussels I Under 9 soccer team, played an excellent game both offensively and defensively. Meeting Elma I on their turf, Brussels captured a 4-3 victory on the strength of three goals by Scott Somerville and one by Justin Hub- ben. well with Andy Van Beek, Tim Harrison and Stephen Todd scoring runs. After Atwood tied the score in the bottom half of the inning, a Brian Oldfield run again put Brussels in the lead. Unfortunately, the lead was not to last. Atwood scored two in the second, and five in the third, and walked away with the victory. On Thursday, the boys took to the-field again, this time against Seaforth. In what proved to be an exciting game, the boys came upon the short end of a 9-5 score. The game did not get off to a Brussels' first goal. His dribbling and passing sparked the B team. He scored three goals and set up several more. Despite the determined efforts of Richard Terpstra who led Acre T, the Brussels B's slowly began to overtake Acre T. Terry Nichol of Brussels B scored three goals and Terry Brown finished the scoring with a goal to down Acre T 7-3. good start for the Brussels squad. In what has proven to be a glaring trend so far this season the Brussels defense allowed their opponents to build a quick 8 - 2 lead. On this occasion, the gap proved too large to fill. Brussels runs were scored by Rob McKercher, MatrCameron, Joshua Gropp, Philip Leger and Nathan Garland, who hit a powerful homerun in the top of the fourth. Brian Oldfield and Matt McCall shared the pitching duties in these games, and both performed admirably.
