UCW discuss healing benefits of gardening
Auburn UCW met at the church
at 8 p.m. on Monday, June 24. The
introduction on "Watch Nature and
see God" was given by Kay Lapp.
This was followed by singing two
verses of hymn, All Things Bright
and Beautiful with Ila Cunningham
as pianist. Grace r - Liwright read
c scriptures and ended with
prayer. On display was a table with
various plants at different stages of
growth, plus handy tools to use in
gardening.
Maureen Bean gave "The Garden
Oasis of Healing", which is the use
of nature in hospitals and nursing
homes. There are gardens that
patients can enjoy and also assist
there. This is much more like home
than sterile hospital rooms. It has
been proven very beneficial in
patient recovery.
She also told of a couple in a
textile industry town in Chile. The
company collapsed and the couple
ended up on welfare. A group there
started organic gardening and
within three years raised them-
selves above poverty with their
backyard plots.
Kay Lapp spoke on churches for
God. She told of London churches
that have opened their doors and
heart to those in need. They are not
shunning God's work but doing it.
She also read about a Calgary
Church which is only 16 years old.
The closeness and friendliness of
this church draws people through
its doors. They soon become active
members. It is a very active church
in helping those in need.
Prayer was given by Kay and the
last verses of All Things Bright and
Beautiful closed it., .,,rship.
Margaret Bakker took over the
business meeting. Elva Armstrong
adopted the minutes of the May
meeting. Grace bave the card
report. It was decided that members
bring cookies on June 30 for use at
Camp Menesetung. The cabin had
been seen on Camp Sunday and
looked very nice.
Maxine Seers and her helpers
will be in charge of the
Threshermen's Reunion booth
again this year. Suggestions were
chili in a cup, sandwiches and
desserts. The UCW appreciates the
excellent job.
Tena Empey had taken quilts to-
Five Oaks but found everyone there
involved in a large gathering. She
will take them again later.
Marilyn Verbe,ek spoke regarding
Zehrs receipts. She has a number
and discovered that Laura May
Chamney had a collection to add to
it. Teresa Roetcisoender has written
about soup labels but no answer has
been received as yet. Members
were reminded to keep pop tabs as
they buy wheelchairs. Frances
Clark takes all the stamps saved
and Heinz baby food labels are in
charge of Kay Lapp.
It was decided to house clean the
church on July 31 and Aug. 1.
Anyone wishing to help is
welcome. Elva and 1C2,, ;;;,,„,e

Club visits orchard
On June 24 at 12:30 p.m. the
Walkerbum Club met at the home
of Vera Penfound. From there they
drove on to Apple Park Orchards,
near Goderich. There they enjoyed
a picnic lunch in host Ed
Laithwaite's back yard.
A very short business meeting
•was held after lunch. Martha Daer
thanked the club for the violet
given to her after her accident. The
club informed her they were
delighted that she was able to join
them for the day, cast and all.
Ethel Ball suggested that the club
come to her cottage for the Septem-
ber meeting if the weatherman co-
operates. Betty Archambault said
that if not possible the club will be
welcome at her home. Betsy
Verwey will be program convenor
and Vera Penfound in charge of
lunch.
Treasurer Ruth McClinchey, who
is moving to Goderich, gave her
final report. She also gave a
donation of $10. Members are
pleased that Ruth will still come to
as many meetings as possible. The
new treasurer is Bernice Norman.
Mr. Laithwaite took them on a
tour of his property. His grand-
father George Laithwaite had
created numerous stone and
concrete statues, something to see
and admire. First there is a
beautiful stone archway with "Our
Home" on it and the maple leaf. He
had predicted it as the Canadian
emblem.
Many of the statues have poems
written about them by Mr.
Laithwaite. The first is the three
fishermen — a statue of himself and
two buddies.
A number of statues are on
Biblical subjects such as Balaom
the might monarch, the queen of
Sheba and the lamb and the lion.
There is also a very realistic one
of the American Indians and
humour in Jack and Jill and Maggie
and Jiggs. No one can imagine the
time spent in creating these statues.
They are works of art and years of
hard work.
The club expressed their
admiration and presented the host
with a small gift. The trip home
was interesting. They went past the
school which Mr. Laithwaite and
Vera attended, now a lovely home.
It was then on past the farm where
Vera grew up, on to the Little
Lakes and a view of a home being
built at the High Point and so a
lovely afternoon ended with
memories that will remain.
