Principal opens concert
The Grinch (Matt Campbell of Belgrave) found out you don't try to steal Sears Festival
drama tickets when Xena, Warrior Princess (Ashley Gropp of Brussels) is around. Hollering
for help is Christine Wilbee of Brussels, right, while seated behind her is Jocelyn Dore of
Wingham who played the part of Xena's sidekick Gabrielle. The F.E. Madill Drama Guild
students' performance was part of the student council's talent show, held Friday.

CHRISTMAS IS MUSIC!
By Alicia Marshall
On Dec. 17 Blyth Public School
held its annual Christmas concert at
the Blyth Memorial Hall. The
theme of this performance was
entitled "Christmas is Music".
Kristin Oster acted as Mistress of
Ceremonies for the evening.
Mr. Maertens opened the concert
with his solo entitled Children are
a Treasure from the Lord. He was
followed by the JK/SK class who
eagerly showed their anticipation of
the arrival of Christmas by singing
Dear Old Santa Had a Band and
Waiting for Christmas. They also
recited two poems entitled
"Welcome" and "If You Can't Wait
for Christmas".
Next, the Grade 1 class sang an
action song He'll be Coming Down
the Chimney and O Come Little
Children which centred around the
excitement of receiving and giving
gifts.
The next number involved the
Grade 3/4 students who sang Little
Drummer Boy with Stacy McLellan
as soloist. They concluded their
part by singing and dancing to
Santa Claus is Coming Down.
After the Grade 3/4 class, the
Grade 4/5 students could hardly
contain their excitement as they
sang On Christmas Morning and
Rocking' Around the Christmas
Tree. They created and performed a
dance to the last verse of Rockin'
Around the Christmas Tree.
After this the audience sang two
carols, with the Grade 7/8 class
singing the descant part in Silent
Night. The Grade 7/8 class then
sang Silver Bells with Jackie
Falconer as the soloist and Shine a
Light for Peace in hopes of peace
and joy at Christmas time around
the world.
My class (Grade 6/7) hustled and
bustled about, singing Let's Go
Christmas Shopping and then
slowed the tempo down to sing a
Swedish lullaby called A Thousand
Candles. We then sang a partner
song called The Manger Song.
The Grade 2/3 class told the
audience about the first Christmas.
They sang four songs Baby Jesus,
Knock, Knock, Knock, Shepherds
Leave the Hillside and Away in a
Manger. They ended by joining in
a choral reading entitled, That
Wonderful Night.
At this point all of the students
assembled on the stage and on the
balcony to sing Let There Be Peace
on Earth.
The students and staff of Blyth
Public School would like to thank
everyone who attended this
concert.
After the Bill 160 political
protest, all boards of education
were asked to examine their school
year calendars to develop a plan to
try to make up for some of the time
lost. The Ministry of Education and
Training has not yet approved the
proposal put forward by the Huron
County Board of Education.
Some of the proposed changes
will be important to students and
parents.
First semester exams will now
begin Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998 and
will end on Monday, Jan. 26, 1998.
Second Semester classes will begin
Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998.
Very soon students will begin to
select courses for the upcoming
school year. Guidance teachers and
regular classroom teachers will be
talking to students about the pro
cess and about appropriate choices.
Parents shot Id be discussing the
course selection process with their
children to help ensure that
students are making appropriate
choices.
Mr. Walker and a number of
students have formed a computer
club which is maintaining and
extending the school internet web
page. If anyone is interested in
upcoming events or schedules they
should visit our website at
http://www.huroned.edu.on.ca/Madill/.
Many other interesting pieces of
information can be found at the
site.

THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK
Try alternating between alcoholic
and non-alcoholic beverages. The
extra fluid will fill you up with less
calories and won't reduce your
mental fortitude. Fix your own
drinks at a party to avoid the
heavy-handed host. For lighter
alcohol and calorie choices, try
wine spritzers, "light" beer and diet
soft drink mixes. Why not avoid
the alcohol altogether and indulge
in tomato juice with Bloody Mary
seasonings, club soda and a twist of
lemon or fruit juice, or even better,
good old water? It's sugar-free and
calorie-free!
are entering into an agreement with
ENO to develop and operate a radio
station which will operate over the
internet. We will keep you
informed and hope you tune in
once we are "up and running". You
are able to stay in touch with
Wingham anywhere in the world
through our internet radio station.
The F. E. Madill School
Advisory Council has instituted a
new award called the "Acts of
Excellence Award". As the name
indicates, individuals or groups will
be recognized for acts of excellence
throughout the school year through
the presentation of a plaque. Our
first award winners will be named
this month.
Next semester we will have some
staffing changes. Mr. Damsma will
be retiring and Mr. Wright will be
transferring to South Huron High
School. We want to thank both
leaders for all of their hard work
and wish them well in their new
ventures.
From all of the staff and students,
we wish you a very happy and safe
holiday season.
SEMI FORMAL
On Friday, Dec. 12, the F. E.

go out for a good time.
The theme of this year's dance
was "Christmas". The council
members said the reason for the
dance was that they thought the
school needed a dance before
exams.
The gymnasium was well
decorated. Mrs. Graham deserves a
great deal of gratitude for her
patience and her time, helping with
the decorations.
The peer mentors sold snacks and
drink in the main lobby, which was
also decorated for the occasion.
The council members expected
between 100 - 150 people at this
year's event. According to Andrew
Exel (student council member) this
year's semi-formal was a great time
for everyone.
Thanks to everyone who helped
with the semi-formal's decorations
and other jobs. Keep up the great
work.
