Carol-sing begins Knox Christmas concert Knox United Church annual Christmas concert was held on Friday, Dec. 12 in the WI Hall commencing at 7:30 p.m. Kim McArter, Sunday School co­ ordinator, was the master of ceremonies. The evening started off with a carol-sing including Deck the Halls, The First Noel, and It Came Upon a Midnight Clear. Junior kindergarten to Grade 1 did a Christmas welcome and Merry Christmas. Nicole Robinson B elgraveThe news from Compiled by Linda Campbell Phone 357-2188 50 at WZ Christmas dinner The Belgrave branch of the Women's Institute held a special evening event on Thursday, Dec. 11 starting at 7 p.m. Approximately 50 members and friends gathered at the WI Hall, Belgrave for the annual Christmas dinner and program. Wilma Higgins and Alice Nicholson were the program convenors for this event. Once everyone had arrived, the WI Grace was sung and a turkey dinner with all the trimmings was served by the United Church Women's group of Knox United Church, Belgrave. It was greatly enjoyed by all who had been served this bountiful dinner. Next, a singalong of Christmas Carols was conducted by Dorothy Coultes. A draw was held for door prizes, with the lucky winners being: Ada Taylor, Heather Campbell, Freda Scott, Kurt Lentz, Glenn Coultes and Rev. Mary Jane Hobden. 57 attend Edgar Christmas Vince, Patty and Alicia Makas of London spent last weekend with Mabel Wheeler. Fifty-seven Edgar relatives held their Christmas in the WI Hall on Saturday, Dec. 13. The Women's Institute catered to the dinner. After a delicious turkey dinner and all the trimmings the children went to the platform and Brenda Edgar played the piano and all sang Christmas Carols until Santa Claus arrived at 8 p.m. After Santa left, a game of court whisk was played. Relatives attended from Aylmer, London, Brigden, Petrolia, Holmesville, Lucknow, Barrie, Tavistock, Atwood, Wingham, played I Saw Three Ships on the piano followed by Christie Sippel performing O Come All Ye Faithful. The Sunday School performed "The Shepherd's Child" followed by Trevor McArter playing We Three Kings of Orient Are on the piano. Grades 4-8 did "Benjamin’s Top". Shawn Cottrill played Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Chris Cottrill played Have Yourself a Special guests Kurt Lentz and Jim Bakelaar, were introduced by Wilma Higgins. They each spoke of their time spent on the island of Haiti and of the problems encountered there and also the good things that are happening in this poor, under-developed country. Both men had travelled to Haiti to help with construction and in the medical field. Both intend to return again to help in anyway they can. Slides and video were shown to give an insight about the history and culture and needs of the people of Haiti. Alice Nicholson thanked the gentlemen on behalf of all present and the evening drew to a close with Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year being wished to all. The first potluck meal and program for the new year will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at noon in the WI Hall. Blyth and Belgrave. The family of Sarah Anderson held their Christmas dinner at the WI Hall on Sunday, Dec. 7. The delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings was catered to by UCW, Belgrave. Guests attended from British Columbia, Kingston, Milton, Georgetown, Hamilton, Guelph, Fergus and Mississauga. Douglas Thompson and friend Valerie Smith of Toronto and Mr. and Mrs. Chester MacDonald of Goderich were dinner guests last Thursday at the home of Ruth Johnston. Merry Little Christmas and Jeremy Robinson played Silent Night on the piano. A recitation was given by Clifford Coultes. A sing song of carol and hymns included Joy to the World, We Wish you a Merry Christmas, Angels We Have Heard on High, O Little Town of Bethlehem, O Come All Ye Faithful, Away in a Manger, Love Came Down at Christmas, Go Tell It On the Mountain. Special thanks was extended to all the Sunday School teachers and students who participated and helped to make the concert a success and to Kim McArter for putting together the concert and for all those who came to enjoy the entertainment. The evening closed with Santa Claus arriving on time to hand out treats to all the children. Mary Hunter and Noreen Gnay greeted worshippers and handed out service of worship on Sunday, Dec. 14 at Knox United Church. Alice Yuill and Becky Logan were in charge of nursery. The church was adorned with several poinsettias, Christmas tree and several decorations. Rev. Mary Jane Hobden welcomed the congregation on the third Sunday of Advent, followed by song time including The Butterfly Song and Angels From the Realms of Glory. The Call to Worship was read responsively and the Prayer of Approach in unison, followed by the Hymn of Praise O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Donna Kellington and her daughter Bridgette read the Advent reading and lit the candle of joy for the Third Sunday in Advent. The candles of hope and peace were also lit, followed by prayer in unison and the singing of Hope Is A Star. Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon were read responsively from the bulletin. The senior choir sang It Came Upon The Midnight Clear, accompanied by Elizabeth Procter at the piano. The Old Testament reading was from Zephariah 3: 14-20 and Isaiah 12: 2 - 6. The hymn In the Bleak Midwinter was followed by story time for the children. Rev. Hobden asked the children "What tells us that Christmas is near?" The children replied snow, Christmas tree, decorations, presents, lights outside, Jesus, Christmas carols, candles and advent. "We give presents to all we love and care for. God gave us Jesus as our gift,” she said. The children were all given a sticker to wear from Rev. Hobden to remind them that Christmas was coming and remind other people of all the things that God gave them - hope, peace and joy. After the children adjourned downstairs for Sunday school, the reading from Philippians 4: 4-7 was given. The gospel lesson was from Luke 3:7-18. The congregation joined in singing The Race That Long. The sermon was based on "God's Signs of Love”. ”In the same way God was with his people in Israel, he is also with us today," Rev. Prayer of the People, The Lord's Prayer, the closing hymn All Poor Men and Humble, sending forth, commissioning and three-fold amen "Go Now In Peace" concluded the worship service. The Christmas Eve Candlelight service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Knox United Church.
