Wingham hosp. gets Shriners’ donation for children’s programs
50 on Tolton's speech pathology
caseload alone.
The next closest hospitals which
provide the same services to
youngsters are Stratford, Owen
Sound and London. For mom
Wendy Zinn, whose young son
Ryan benefits from the program, it
is wonderful to have all the services
provided locally without having to
make trips to the city for therapy
for her young son.
Tolton says that early detection
of problems in infants and children
is crucial to success in treating
those problems. She urges parents
to talk over any concerns they have
about their child's development
with their family doctor, who can
refer youngsters to the hospital
program.

They're a familiar sight at
parades and fish fries in their funny
hais, but Shriners are deadly
serious when it comes to their
commitment, to children with
special needs. _
Last week, representatives of the
Bluewater Fire Brigade, a unit of
the Mocha Temple Shrine,
presented a cheque for $4,000 to
Wingham and District Hospital.
The money will be used to
purchase equipment to be used by
the Children's Service Team (CST)
at the hospital.
Wingham is among five Huron
County hospitals which will benefit
from the Bluewater Fire Brigade's
largess with similar donations in
the other county towns. Shriners
take a special interest in helping
burned and crippled children,
operating 22 state-of-the-art
hospitals across North America.
When the Bluewater Fire Brigade
first approached the local hospital's
rehabilitation team about the
possibility of making a donation,
they could not have been more
delighted, says Jane Tolton, WDH
speech language pathologist and
CST co-ordinator.
Cutbacks in recent years have
meant there is little money in the
budget for equipment acquisition,
she notes. The Shriners' donation
could not have come at a better
time.
Among the equipment to be
purchased are activity stations for
children, barrier games for better
communication, social skills
activities for special children, an
adjustable-height fun-ball tee and
other items too numerous to
mention.
The Children's Services Team at
Wingham and District Hospital
takes in youngsters from a wide
area. In addition to speech language
pathology, occupational therapy
and physiotherapy are part of this
comprehensive package which also
involves the rehabilitation
department and kinesiologist Mary
Skinn.
At present, there are 13 children
in the CST program and more than * •
