LCBO supports Red Ribbon campaign As part of its year-round efforts to promote responsible drinking, the LCBO is again asking its customers to support Mothers Against Drunk Driving's (MADD) Project Red Ribbon '97 this holiday season. "Project Red Ribbon has been very effective in raising public awareness of the dangers associated with drinking and driving," said LCBO Chair and CEO Andrew S. Brandt. "LCBO employees are pleased to support this campaign for the eighth consecutive year and remind motorists to act responsibly, by being safe and sober drivers." "We thank LCBO employees and customers for their continued support of Project Red Ribbon. We encourage everyone to 'Tie One On For Safety' this holiday season and make the commitment to drive sober," says Tony Carvalho, chair of the National Board of Directors of MADD Canada. "Let's make this holiday season a time for great joy and not sadness due to the tragic consequences that can result from impaired driving." Throughout December, all 598 LCBO stores across Ontario will display Project Red Ribbon '97 donation boxes at checkout counters, offering customers the campaign's signature red ribbons for display on the outside of vehicles. Last December, the How to throw a safe Christmas party It is eight o'clock and the Johnsons are making last-minute preparations for their Christmas party. Mistletoe is hanging in the foyer, a bowl of eggnog is sitting in the kitchen, sheet music containing carols is lying on the piano bench and the house is wreathed in tinsel. The Johnsons always throw a good Christmas party, which means they're considerate but also careful hosts. Mr. Johnson has purchased a good supply of low-alcohol beer and alcohol-free sodas to complement the wine and liquor he is offering his guests. He has also prepared a non-alcoholic punch to go along with the eggnog and is presently setting up his bar on a table in the living room. Mr. Johnson plans on serving all drinks himself and has posted the bar schedule on a wall behind the table: closing hour is at 10 p.m., two hours before the party is supposed to end. Mrs. Johnson has prepared the guest bedroom and has brought out lots of sleeping bags for guests who've travelled a long way or who might have drunk too much to drive safely. Sitting by the phone in the kitchen is a list of cab companies in tb\vn, for guests who need to get home that night but LCBO raised more than $35,000 for Project Red Ribbon. The red ribbon signifies the motorist's commitment to drive sober and emphasizes that alcohol and driving don't mix. Last year, more than 2 million red ribbons were distributed across Canada. Project Red Ribbon began in 1989 to provide the public with a positive and visible way to demonstrate their support of sober driving, while sending a message to those who drink and drive. In 1996, some 1,510 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in Canada. LCBO store staff receive training to help ensure that individuals who appear to be intoxicated or underage - or who seem likely to give or sell alcohol to those who are - do not purchase alcohol. In 1996, more than 560,000 people were challenged by LCBO staff and 76,000 were refused service. To make it easier to determine whether its customers are of legal drinking age, the LCBO introduced its BYID (Bring Your Identification) photo ID card for persons 19 years of age and older. To further ensure minors are not served in its stores, the LCBO introduced its Check 25 program last December, whereby anyone appearing to be under 25 is asked for proof of age. don't feel comfortable driving. Mrs. Johnson has also prepared an impressive array of dips, finger foods, patd spreads, fruit, and cheese and crackers. Although most of the guests will have eaten before arriving, the Johnsons want to make sure nobody drinks alcohol on an empty stomach. The Johnson live very close to a park with a steep hill, but they've packed up their toboggans and skis for the evening. As fun as a night of sledding might be, the Johnsons don't want to mix alcohol with outdoor physical activities because people are more prone to accidents when they've been drinking. The Johnson know that if one of their guests drinks at their party and then injures themselves, they could be held liable, but that isn't the main reason they're being so careful. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson's Christmas party is an annual tradition and they simply want to do everything to make it perfect. People throwing a party this holiday season should keep these tips in mind, or pick up the "Having a Party?" brochure at LCBO stores.
