The Grade 2/3s are writing fascinating stories on the DreamWriter computers. The DreamWriters are little computers with a real keyboard (just like a computer keyboard). The eager-for-Christmas class is hurrying to write letters to Santa. They have also been reading Christmas and snow stories. BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS! By Heather A. Elliott Hurray! The Book Fair is coming! On Dec. 8-18, the Scholastic Book Fair is coming here to Blyth's very own School Library! At this special fair, the students can choose from a variety of books, posters and bookmarks. Students are allowed to purchase books in a scheduled time period or at lunch. From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Dec. 11, adults and their children will be able to attend the fair and purchase books during interviews. They will also be allowed to come in during the lunch hour on other days to purchase books. The Scholastic Books are a great idea for Christmas gifts, so don't you miss it! A MUSICAL CHRISTMAS By Dane Corneil This year BPS is putting on a show entitled "Christmas is Music". Every class will sing many famous Christmas arrangements. The students are busily practising and creating decorations for the performance. They would also like to thank the producers of Brad and Gail's Marvelous Wedding Adventures for allowing them to use some of their props. The production will be held at Memorial Hall on Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and the dress rehearsal will take place on the morning of Dec. 16. Please come to see it because they have been working very hard! THE COLOURS OF KINDERGARTEN By Katelyn Linner The JK/SK students continue to learn about the colours green, brown and purple. For the colour green, the kindergartens read Green Eggs and Ham and Those Green Things. As an art activity for green, they fingerpainted a picture with green paint. Brown was the next colour on the curriculum for JK/SK so they read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? They published a really neat book called: "Kindergarten, What Do You See?" Since it is so close to Christmas and the colour is brown, they decided to read The Reindeer Christmas. They cut and pasted reindeer heads using their traced hands for antlers. Another activity for brown and Christmas was reading and acting out the Ginger Bread Man. Purple is the last colour for this month so they learned The Purple Cow, read several Barney books and made purple jello jigglers. They have also started to learn some songs and poems for the school's Christmas concert. UPDATE By Taylor Hesselwood We've received MORE Zehrs and Scrimgeour's tapes! NEW REPORT CARDS ARE COMING HOME! By Scott McLellan The Ministry of Education has written a new curriculum and created report cards which go along with the curriculum. The purpose of these new report cards is to aim for more clarity for parents and guardians. Grades kindergarten through to Grade 6 will receive levels and letter gradings. The Grades 7 and 8 will receive assigned percentage marks. There are four levels: Level 1 falls much below the provincial standard, a D-, D and D+, Level 2 approaches the provincial standard, a C-, C and C+, Level 3 meets the provincial standard, B and B+, Level 4 is above and beyond the provincial standard, an A-, A and A+. So far the government has only created a language and math curriculum but the rest are supposed to be coming in the near future. On Dec. 9 parents caught a glimpse of these new report cards when their sons and daughters brought them home. ELECTRICITY MAN By John Battye On Nov. 13 the students attending Blyth Public School were amazed when Bill and Joan Coakley from Fergus came and did an outstanding presentation to make students aware of the dangers of electricity. They were sponsored by the PUC. They also displayed some of their own inventions, like a model that shows the many ways people are hurt by electricity when safety rules are not obeyed. It is my opinion that all the students were astonished when he lit up the room with a dill pickle! Now I think most of the students are going to be more careful around electricity.
