To get the money all one has to do is apply. As it's an eligibility claim parents need not have a receipt showing money paid for a caregiver. Parents with a child or children, who were 13 or less on Oct. 27 or receiving special educa tion programs or were in a child care centre or nursery school housed in a public school, that were unable to attend due to closure or if the parents were concerned for their safety, can submit a claim. "They do aulhororize the release to Revenue Canada of all informa tion obtained on the form," said Baird-Jackson. The most recent form, however, does not expressly state that the money may not be used as a deduction. "The onus is on the person making the claim with Revenue Canada," said Baird- Jackson. With 90 per cent of the savings regulated by the province to be returned to the province's coffers, donating back to the schools is one way to keep the money in the local system, admits Baird-Jackson. Rich Maertens, principal of Blyth PS, said, "There are parents think ing this money was meant for edu cation purposes and to be used by the school. It is, however, an indi vidual choice." Huron-Perth gets aid for diabetes Helen Johns, MPP for Huron County announced that St. Marys, Seaforth, Clinton, Wingham, Exeter, Goderich and Listowel will receive new funding to enhance the education services currently provided. These dollars represent Huron Perth's 1997-98 share of the Diabetes Complications Prevention Strategy (DCPS). DCPS is a three year, $5.8 million strategy to combat diabetes. "With no cure for diabetes, education is essential to controlling it," said Johns. "This money will go to hospitals and health agencies to deliver improved education programs in their communities and surrounding areas." In Ontario, it is estimated that diabetes is responsible for 25 per cent of cardiac surgery, 50 per cent of heart attacks, 70 per cent of strokes, 50 per cent of non- traumatic amputations, 55 per cent of new cases of blindness and 33 per cent of dialysis cases. "Preventive programs are an essential component of the health care system" said Johns. "With this reinvestment, local education programs are being enhanced in communities across the province to provide Ontarians with the preventive diabetes-related information and assistance they need." These new DCPS programs complement the Ministry's existing Diabetes Programs, the Northern Diabetes Health Network and Southern Ontario Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative, which also provides need-based community programs and services.
