Special music begins service
Viola Kirkby and Mary
Humphries greeted worshippers al
Duffs United Church on Dec. 7,
White Gift Sunday. Phyllis
Mitchell and Glenda Carter played
Christmas music before the service
began. The two choirs opened the
service with their introit, a three-
part round called, "Prepare the way
of the Lord".
Rev. James Murray and the
congregation read together the Call
to Worship written on the back of
the bulletin. Heidi and son Darrell
McClure read the Advent candle
litany and Darrell lit the second
blue candle. Verses one and two
were sung of the hymn A Candle is
Burning.
The choir sang the new advent
song To A Maid Whose Name was
Mary.
Rev. Murray announced that next
Sunday everyone is invited to go
downstairs after the service for
soup and sandwiches and singing.
The children of the Sunday
school then came forward and sang
Mary had a Baby. Then the
children presented their White Gift
service called, "The Symbols of
Advent." During the presentation of
the offering and white gifts Gloria
Wilbee sang, Beautiful Star of
Bethlehem.
Walton P.S. News
The UCWs Christmas potluck
supper and meeting was a great
success. There was every kind of
casserole and dessert imaginable
and no one went away hungry. The
basement and tables were decorated
by Vai Pethick and Barb Durrell.
Guests and long-time members
enjoyed the evening as well. Donna
Godkin, who has just come back
from a teaching position in South
Korea, gave a very interesting
presentation about her time there.
She told us many interesting things
about life in Korea. For one thing it
isn't considered rude to point out to
people that they are overweight,
have freckles or moles on their
faces or have a big nose.
They are fascinated by body hair
as Korean people don't have a lot of
hair on their bodies. The little
children have not seen many white
people so Donna said that they
always had eyes on them and a lot
of people pointing and giggling.
They were lucky to have a toilet
in their apartment, but in the stores
and other places the toilets were
just holes in the floor. If you ever
want to visit Korea make sure to
bring toilet paper as it is hard to
come by there, she said.
Schooling is very important and
children go to school from 8 a.m. to
4 p.m. For some there was school
in the evenings as well. People are
conditioned to get only five hours
of sleep so it isn't unusual to see
children up until 11 p.m.
Study and more studying is a
constant over there for school
children. Crime rate is very low
there as a result of kids in school
and homework.
Sunday is a family day and that is
when families, even their dog, go
shopping. The markets are jam-
packed with people buying
groceries.
Donna sent around different food
for the ladies to sample. Their food
she said tends to be very spicy,
using lots of hot peppers, etc.
Donna said that for leisure the
people like to go mountain
climbing. She said it was
something to see the line-up of
people going up the mountain.
. Some of the don'ts as a teacher,
she said, are - don't sit on a desk,
don't write their names in red - that
- means death.
One thing that was different as
well was when disciplining the
children they will look away. Here
country teachers want the children
to look at them, but over there a
turned head means that they are
listening to you.
There was much more that
Donna told the women and
everyone left knowing a lot more
about South Korea.
Marion Godkin, Barb Durrell,
Dianne VanVliet, Vai Pethick and
Dianne McCallum led the group in
the Devotional part of the program.
Marie McGavin played the piano as
Christmas hymns were sung.
Barb Durrell and Monique Baan
were in charge of the business.
Kdgns design houses
Parents, grandparents and aunts
pitched in to help the Walton
kindergarten children make some
very sweet and tasty-looking
gingerbread houses, earlier in the
week they made some Christmas
tree ornaments and made
playdough spice gingerbread cut
out cookies.
The Grade 2/3s are into graphing
this week. They've graphed their
favourite hockey players, their
favourite animals and favourite
colours. They have also begun their
Christmas reading with such books
as "Santa Doesn't Mop Floors" and
"Unicoms don't Drive Sleighs".
Continuing with their reading,
writing and arithmetic, Mrs.
Vandenool's Grade 3/4 are into
their Christmas novel and book
reports. They have also started
some Christmas story writings.
T-shirts and sweatshirts, with the
school logo, are being sold at the
school this week. Come and see the
shirts and have a look at the books
at the book fair as well on
Thursday and Friday.
