Writer thanks United Way campaign supporters THE EDITOR, The Huron Adult Day Centre is very fortunate to be a member agency of the Huron United Way. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the people of Huron County for the wonderful response to the United Way annual campaign. For the first time since United Way started up in Huron County in 1993 their goal has been surpassed, and although due in large part to Champion and Sifto contributions, it is also an indication that other citizens in the county are recognizing that giving to United Way can benefit so many of the more vulnerable members of our community, and remember, every dollar donated stays right here in our community. Sincerely Rosemary Armstrong Executive Director Huron Adult Day Centre communities; however, our numbers are becoming scarce. Many people do not know we exist and turn to other groups. Money, raised through luncheons, catering, quilt draws, goes to support your communities and provincial charities. The benefactors of our money are the many local and provincial children's cancer centres, such as the new Camp Rainbow near Watford, Camp Trillium and the Arthritis Society. Many other organizations benefit from our monies - they know who we are. We also maintain locally a hospital bed committee. We have, at no cost to the public, canes, crutches, etc., for use while you are convalescing at home. We do accept donations. I hope this letter prompts people to join our wonderful organization, or at least search us out; we are Continued on page 22 Serving Grey Council for the next term in Grey Twp., met for its inaugural meeting, Monday. We are the Oddfellows and Rebekahs of your community. I feel that there is a need to know there are fraternal clubs which work within our fine cities and communities going about their work quietly. While we are a fraternal organization, one must be at least 18 years of age to join and must be sponsored by another member. You may at one time have had a relative who was a member and, therefore, you are interested in the work that we do. We came by the name Oddfellows because in the early 1800s it was considered "odd" to visit the sick. After all, medicine was not what it is today. One could contact a serious illness visiting a sick friend. So without regard for one's health and well being, Oddfellows visited those who were sick. It was also "odd" to want to relive the distressed. After all, one didn't have many possessions of one's own, let alone share with another in distress. However, if one needed help, for example, a cord of wood, and an oddfellow had two, the oddfellow would gladly share, knowing his kindness would be returned if he fell upon hard times. Oddfellows believe in memorial services for their members. There were travelling preachers who would do the service, if he happened along the way. But Oddfellows made sure people were buried properly. In some communities, Oddfellows maintain their own cemeteries and burial plots for those members in need. Odd fellows also educated orphans. They would see that children of that time were educated to at least Grade 8. So our fraternal group was formed. Our membership includes passwords and signs known only to members. Programs are performed in a ritualistic ceremony to exemplify the teachings of our founding members. This is done in a very regal and dignified way. The Rebekah Lodge is a subsidiary of the Oddfellow Lodge. Open to women, one need not have a male counterpart in the Oddfellows to belong. Women follow the same basic principles of membership. Our "Three Link Fraternity" stands for friendship, love and truth. Our teachings can be found in the Book of Ruth in the Old Testament of the Bible.
