Belgrave Girls off to flying start
game, then added an empty netter
to claim the tournament
championship with a 5-3 win.
All of Blyth’s scoring occurred in
the second as they held a 3-2 edge
after two periods. Black and
Haggitt earned assists on Oldfield's
opening goal. Lucknow took a 2-1
lead before Oldfield and Corey
Bragg assisted on the tying goal as
D. Bromley found himself alone in
front and easily deposited a
rebound over the fallen goaltender.
Blyth then took their 3-2 lead,
with just over one minute left, as
Haggitt set up defenceman Craig
Mark's shot from the point.
Lucknow evened the score three
minutes into the third and the two
teams played an exciting period of
solid hockey before Lucknow’s late
game heroics gave them the
championship.
The Bulldogs will now build on
this experience as they prepare for
the challenges ahead.
The Belgrave Junior Girls
travelled to Teeswater for their
opening game to the 1997-98
hockey season.
Nicole Proctor opened the
scoring at 7:33 of the first period
converting a nice pass from Lauren
Hoegy and Lindsay Hopf. Michelle
Cook added another 36 seconds
later with an unassisted effort.
Proctor closed out the first period
with her second of the contest at
the 1:24 mark putting the visitors
up by three.
She notched the hat-trick at 8:38
of the second on another individual
effort, then 12 seconds later Sarah
McDonald responded with a goal
on a perfect feed from Cook.
Once again Proctor came through
with a solo tallie at the 5:52 mark.
Jenna Reinhardt put Teeswater
on the board at 5:07 of the second
on a pass from Michelle Reinhardt.
Teeswater added to their score with
Jenna Reinhardt getting her second
goal with an assist to Pam Elliott.
Proctor got things going again at
12:14 of the third period with
another unassisted effort. Cook
then added another at 10:13 on a
great pass from McDonald. Cook
got the hat-trick as well, bulging
the twine with 9:15 remaining in
the game to close out the visitor
scoring.
Teeswater would respond with
two more, one at 8:18 when M.
Reinhardt scored from Megan
Moffat and Jenna Hart at 2:51 from
Reinhardt.
It was too little, too late as the
visiting squad walked away with a
9-4 victory.
Kristen Palmer had a strong
game in the Belgrave net.
On Nov. 22 the girls hosted a
young Port Elgin squad. This was a
very lopsided affair with the home
squad coming away with a 17-1
victory.
Cook led the way picking up nine
points on seven goals and two
assists. Palmer had four goals and
one assist while Rachel Elliott
added three goals and four assists.
Hopf had four assists, Sarah
McDonald, one goal and five
assists, Laurin Hoegy, one goal and
one assist and Candice McLellan,
one goal. Coach Steve Cook said,
"This was a great offensive effort
by our Belgrave team but you had
to admire the enthusiasm of both
the fans and players from Port
Elgin. They just never gave up."
Proctor did a good job between
the pipes.
Nov. 30 found the junior girls on
the road to Kincardine. Proctor
scored at 11:15 of the first then
McDonald from Hoegy and Cook
at 5:41 of the first. Cook then
tallied two of her own at 5:25 and
4:21 of the first period.
Proctor scored from Hopf at
10:41 of the second, then Hoegy
from Cook at the 1:25 mark. With
57 seconds left in the period, Elliott
scored from Alyssa Ruttan.
Cook got another unassisted goal
at 6:33 of the third, then one
assisted by McLellan al 3:25 of the
third.
Cook scored again, unassisted, al
3:06 of the third.
Goalie Palmer thwarted all of of
the Kincardine efforts. "A great
start to what will no doubt be a
wonderful season of hockey for the
Belgrave Junior girls. Every player
is playing with a lot of effort and
enthusiasm. Continued
improvement will only mean even
more success for the girls, says
Cook.
The Belgrave junior girls will
host Kincardine in Brussels
Saturday, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. for their
next game.
