Boys off to OFSSA
Sharp moves
There was plenty of action like this around the Lucknow net in Wingham on Friday night, as
the Blyth Midget Bulldogs showed some true grit, to take the game 5-2 . In this, the second
game of round robin play in the Silver Stick tournament, the Lucknow goalie does his best to
stop the pressure of the 'Dogs #11 Jeff Cowan.
Midgets just miss Silver Stick title
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs
participated in the Wingham
Regional Silver Stick Tournament
this past weekend.
They did quite well throughout,
advancing to the 'C' Division
Championship Final on Sunday
afternoon against Lucknow. The
teams played a spirited contest but
Lucknow claimed the tournament
crown with a 5-3 win, shocking the
Bulldogs with the winning goal
with seconds left in the contest.
The Bulldogs opened the round
robin portion of the tournament by
crushing the Zurich Thunder 9-1.
The game was tied 1-1 after only
30 seconds of play but it was all
Bulldogs thereafter.
Mike Haggitt earned player-of-
the-game honours by notching four
goals, including a shorthanded
effort, as well as one assist. Jeff
Cowan earned both a pair of goals
and assists. Darrell Gerrits, Mike
Courtney and Corey Campbell
rounded out the scoring with both
Gerrits and Campbell picking up
two assists each.
Defenders Jamie Black and Mike
'Red' Ansley rounded out the
scoring parade with Black earning
a single helper and Ansley
contributing a whopping four
unselfish assists.
The Bulldogs played an inspired
game in their second round-robin
outing as they handed Lucknow
their first loss of the season,
winning 5 - 2. All 15 players came
to play and outworked the
opposition for the entire game.
Kyle Anderson set up Ansley's
opening goal 1:19 into the game.
Lucknow tied the game two
minutes later but Gerrits, assisted
by Cowan, gave the Bulldogs a 2-1
lead with only 18 seconds left in
the first frame. The teams played a
scoreless second and Campbell
gave Blyth a 3-1 lead midway
through the third with help from
linemates Haggitt and Steve
Oldfield.
Lucknow quickly cut the lead to
3-2 but Ansley, from Courtney,
added some insurance on the
powerplay with a laser-like blueline
blast. The Bulldogs salted the game
away with three minutes remaining
in the game as Courtney scored on
a goalmouth scramble with assists
to Ansley and Cowan.
One again Scott Bromley held
the Lucknow sharpshooters at bay
the rest of the way as the Dogs
earned their most impressive
victory of the season, to date, with
this 5-2 win.
The Bulldogs completed the
tournament round-robin against
Wallace Twp. on Saturday
morning. The game was a complete
turnaround from the Lucknow win,
however, a second intermission
attitude adjustment ignited the
Bulldogs in the third, to turn a 1-0
deficit into a 3-1 triumph.
Haggitt started the comeback on
a powerplay as he buried a long
pass from netminder Bromley.
Courtney and Darryl Bromley

assisted on the game winner with
2:01 left in the game as Cowan
skated out from the edge of the
crease and found nothing but twine.
Cowan iced the win with 40
seconds remaining and the Wallace
Twp. netminder on the bench in
favour of an extra attacker as he
drilled a high slapshot from outside
the blueline into the net.
The Bulldogs completed
round-robin portion of
tournament with a perfect
record which sent them into
tournament playoffs against
Tees water, who finished in second
spot in the other round-robin group.
The game was scoreless until
with six minutes remaining in the
second period Oldfield sent
Anderson in on the Teeswater
creasekeeper. Anderson tucked in
his own rebound to give Blyth the
only goal they would need. Darryl
Postma set up the insurance goal
one minute into the third as Haggitt
slipped the puck into the open net
after deking the goalie out of
position.
The Bulldogs rode the shutout
goaltending of S. Bromley the rest
