Scout group purchases canoe Swearing an oath Newly-elected Blyth councillor Jeff Howson, left, reads the oath of office as Les Cook, pastor of Blyth Community Church of God, officiates at the inaugural meeting of council, Dec. 1. Incumbent Rob Lawrie, second from right, and newcomer Murray Nesbitt await their turn. Horticulturalists dine The Blyth Horticultural Society held its Christmas meeting Nov. 18. About 40 people sat down to a delicious potluck supper. Following the dinner, Betty Battye, president, opened the meeting with a special welcome to Jean Whitby of Lucknow, district director for District 8 of the Ontario Horticultural Society. Mrs. Battye announced the new slate of office for 1998. They are: president, Betty Battye; first vice, Dan Taylor; second vice, Lois van Vliet; treasurer, Deanna Snell and secretary Azetta Gibbons. Entertainment was provided by Michelle Cook and Heather Elliott singing several songs accompanied by Anne Elliott on guitar; also Jackie Falconer several numbers. Special guest was Sandi Maaskant of Clinton, co-owner of Flowers n' Things. She gave a demonstration of how to make and decorate an open book centerpiece for Christmas and a clay pot soldier. The 1st Blyth Group Committee met at the Blyth Public School Nov. 24. Traci Radford was welcomed as the new secretary. Her two boys have been involved in 1st Blyth Scouting for several years, and she has been active as a parent volunteer. All sections expressed their appreciation to the Blyth Public School that they were able to continue the Scouting program at the school during the teachers' strike. The weather was excellent for the annual Apple Day Campaign Oct. 25. Auburn, Londesboro, and Blyth were canvassed. Thanks to the support of these communities, $560.64 was raised for Scouting purposes. Because of the number of Blyth Scouters who are qualified to supervise canoe and water activities, and because of the increasing number of such outings in the Scouting program, the Group Committee has purchased a canoe. All Scouting Sections, along with Guiding and other community groups participated in the annual Legion Remembrance Day service. The change of seasons offers a complete change of venue for Scouting. Canoeing, swimming and 'short' weather activities have been shelved for a few months. More section meetings will be dedicated to indoor badge work and gymnasium games. However, outdoor activities are still on the agenda for all sections. Beavers have enjoyed a hike. Eight cubs attended the Sixer-Seconder Camp in October, near Zurich. They also spent the weekend of Nov. 29 - 30 at the Wawanosh Nature Centre, where they learned Continued on page 24 LIONS SANTA DAY Blyth People iMeSSF OPEN SUNDAYS 12 - 5 p.m. 'til Christmas Sundays Only With each purchase you will receive a FREE draw ticket for a Christmas Cheese Pack Draw will be made 5 p.m. Sunday, December 21 Weekly Specials from now 'til Christmas ★ . ★ ^XsWas BUff( Christmas is fast approaching, and we're ready to serve our Christmas Dinner Buffets Sunday, Dec. 14, Sunday, Dec. 21 and other times upon request, for small groups or staff parties.
