The first Controlled Deer Hunt
was held in Huron County in 1980
as a three-day hunt About 100 deer
were harvested by 885 hunters.
Hunts were expanded to four
days in 1981 and then five days in
1991. This year there are two hunts
in Huron County, both six days in
duration.
The first hunt was held Nov. 3 to
Nov. 8 with 2,669 hunters
receiving tags including 492
farmer/landowners. For the second
hunt from Dec. 1 to Dec. 6 a total
of 238 hunters have been issued
tags including 46
farmer/landowners.
Hunting opportunities have
increased through the years in
reaction to expanding deer
populations. The changes instituted
in 1997 are designed to increase the
deer harvest to help reduce

To date, the largest harvest was
recorded in 1995 when 1,384 deer
were taken. It is anticipated that the
1997 harvest will exceed this figure
with the longer hunting season and
an increase of nine per cent in
hunter numbers.
During the November hunt, nine
charges were laid under the Game
and Fish Act ranging from illegal
transfer of tags to loaded firearms
on a road allowance.
Please note that hunters who held
tags in November are NOT eligible
to hunt in the December hunt,
whether or not their game seal was
used.
