E ntertainment Whittaker takes Centre stage The first Controlled Deer Hunt was held in Huron County in 1980 as a three-day hunt About 100 deer were harvested by 885 hunters. Hunts were expanded to four days in 1981 and then five days in 1991. This year there are two hunts in Huron County, both six days in duration. The first hunt was held Nov. 3 to Nov. 8 with 2,669 hunters receiving tags including 492 farmer/landowners. For the second hunt from Dec. 1 to Dec. 6 a total of 238 hunters have been issued tags including 46 farmer/landowners. Hunting opportunities have increased through the years in reaction to expanding deer populations. To date, the largest harvest was recorded in 1995 when 1,384 deer were taken. It is anticipated that the 1997 harvest will exceed this figure with the longer hunting season and an increase of nine per cent in hunter numbers. During the November hunt, nine charges were laid under the Game and Fish Act ranging from illegal transfer of tags to loaded firearms on a road allowance. Please note that hunters who held tags in November are NOT eligible to hunt in the December hunt, whether or not their game seal was used. Whittaker returns to Kitchener after enjoying a series of sell-out shows on his recent European tour. Earlier this year he toured Europe for over three months. More recently, he embarked on a 22-date tour of the U.S. where he headlined a concert with the celebrated Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Performing with a full symphony orchestra was a first, and laid the foundation for an exciting series of future concerts featuring Roger Whittaker and some of the world's leading orchestras. These concerts are set to take place initially in the U.S. and in Western Canada in March of 1998. The son of British expatriates, Whittaker was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1936. He received a BSc. degree from Wales University and could have pursued a career in zoology bio-chemistry of marine biology, were it not for his extra­ ordinary singing talent.
