Merry Mooers meet
for milk matters
On Nov. 3 the Walton Merry
Mooers met for the second-last
meeting of Milk Makes It Better.
The meeting began with the 4-H
pledge and continued on with
making the crust for the ice cream
pizza.
Next members wrote out a recipe
for ice cream that required different
simpler ingredients than the recipe
in their books. They mixed the
ingredients for the ice cream,
stirred it and put it in the freezer.
They sampled sherbert, regular and
premium ice cream and frozen
yogurt to taste the difference in
each of the types.
Jen read the information about
ice cream In the books.
They made chocolate milkshakes
next as a recipe for this meeting
which were good too.
The secretarial report was read.
When the the pizza crust was
cooled they spread the ice cream
over the crust and put it in the
freezer once again. They talked
about the achievement.
Before the meeting was over they
ate the homemade ice cream and
the ice cream pizza.
The Merry Mooers met for the
last time on Nov. 10 at the home of
Darleen Vanderveen. The meeting
began with the pledge, secretary's
report, roll call, and achievement
plans. They told their other leader
about what they had planned for the
achievement. It will be held at the
home of Dianne Baan at 7 p.m.
Friends or family members will be
invited.
Next they made the ice cream
pizza crust for achievement. While
that was in the oven they did a few
pages in their books about judging.
After the ice cream pizza crusts had
been in the freezer they took them
out and each put one-litre ice cream
on them. The crusts went back in
the freezer again.
Someone in the group made mint
chocolate ice cream that everyone
tried. As well they ate leftover ice
cream pizza and raspberry sherbert.
The meeting was then adjourned.
The Walton Early Years students
studied the colour purple this week.
They made a purple surprise and
ate it (grape jelly perogie style
sandwich). They made a purple
candle with paper tubes and sang
about a purple cow and a one-eyed,
one-homed flying purple people
eater.
Thanks to Ken Scott for coming
over and teaching the children the '
last song.
They also mixed red and blue
playdough and watched as it
magically turned to purple.
The letter ’c’ was looked at as
well and they made clown faces
with purple noses.
The Grade 2s used the cooked
pumpkin left over from the Grade
Is pumpkin muffins to make
pumpkin ice cream dessert. They
wanted to surprise the Grade Is.
In making this dessert they had
proof that freezing is very cold.
They compared the seeds from a
marigold seed package with the
seeds that came from the flower
heads of a dead marigold plant.
They were amazed when the seeds
popped out of the old flowers when
they broke them open.
They sorted and saved the seeds
for their spring unit called, 'The
Needs of Plants'.
In Mrs. Vandendool's class the
children are working on 'fall trek
story writing'. They have also
started reading their new novel
called, 'Island of Blue Dolphin.'
The children in Grades 1-4
participated in the Remembrance
Day service by singing songs,
reading poems and listening to
Rick McDonald who came to the
school as a representative for the
Brussels Legion. Andrea
Vanderveen, Blake Miller, Andrew
VanVliet, Katie Williamson,
Marcie McClure and Jennifer Eedy
were the children chosen to go to
the Brussels Legion Remembrance
Day service where they laid
wreaths on the cenotaph.

UCW members
learn to make
ornaments
Members and guests of the UCW
had a great time at their craft night
with Phyllis Mitchell showing them
how to make washcloth ornaments.
Theresa Baan and Shelly McGavin
aided her in this venture.
They also worked on another
craft where they ripped out scenes
from cards, glued them onto
wallpaper, then put clear mac-tack
over them to make either
bookmarks or placemats.
A delicious dessert, assortment of
cakes and ice cream was served
after the short meeting.
County Board of Education.
The test was given over a 10-day
period last spring to all Grade 3
students across the province.
Students' individual results were
sent to their schools and shared
with their parents at the end of
June. Student performance was
measured against provincial
standards on a scale from level 1 to
level 4. The provincial standard for
Grade 3 students in Ontario was
level 2 and 3.
Schools will analyze their results
and then develop an action plan to
better address student performance.
"The testing is not an end in itself
- the way we use the information is
critical," said Marie Parsons,
assistant to the Superintendent of
Schools. Schools will be involved
in reviewing, analyzing the data
and developing plans of action
using the test results as valuable,
base line information.
Huron County schools, parents
and students should be pleased with
the results. Whereas there are
definite areas of the curriculum that
need to be addressed, student
results on this test reflect the
excellence in education that is
evidenced in Huron County
schools.
