County, council briefs 2 more enter race for Huron warden At the Nov. 6 meeting of county council, two new names were entered in the race to be Warden of Huron County in 1998. Carol Mitchell, reeve of Clinton, and Norman Fairies, reeve of How- ick, announced they would be seek ing the top job i^ the county. Already announced as seeking the wardenship were Bill Weber, reeve of Stephen and Jack Coleman, reeve of Stanley. The voting for warden will take place at the inaugural meeting of the new council, Tuesday, Dec. 2. There will continue to be appointed members of the Huron County Library Board after the province no longer has control of the body, council decided. “We’ve been very fortunate that public participation has been excel lent,” said Tom Cunningham, reeve of Hullett and chair of the Social and Cultural Services Committee. “We recommended the input of the public continue.” Public participation will be reduced to three appointed mem bers from six, however. *** With merger talks between Huron and Perth Health Units stalled, Perth County informed Huron it was willing to allow Dr. Susan Tamblyn to remain as acting medical officer of health for Huron only until the end of October. The Board of Health, on Oct. 15, appointed Dr. Beth Henning to take over the temporary post. Huron has been without a full- time MOH since Dr. Maarten Bokhout resigned. The post had been unfilled because it was felt a merger with Perth or another neigh bouring county, would be undertak en. That merger has been stalled, however, since the Ministry of Health sent signals that it may be looking in a different direction.»*♦ Following representation from Hullett Twp., the Agriculture and Public Works Committee agreed to look at what improvements can be made to Huron County Rd. 22 south of Auburn, leading to Craig Hardwoods. The county had pro posed turning the short road over to the township but the township had complained the road was below standard and shouldn’t be turned over until it was improved. The committee asked County Engineer Sandra Lawson to enter into discussions to see if an appro priate solution can be reached with- Bailey asks ‘Why spend on smoke and mirrors?’ Contlnued from page 23 more expense even though it will not own a landfill. The masterplan suggests the county play a role in everything from education and pro motion of recycling and reuse to developing guidelines for local and zone landfills. “I keep wondering why we’d be continuing to spend money on smoke and mirrors,” said Mason in the existing road allowance.*♦* Sparling's Propane won the ten der to provide propane to the coun ty garage at Auburn for the next six years at a cost of 18.47 cents a litre. Bailey, reeve of Blyth. “If it means what I think it does, we keep spending money the way we have.” Tom Cunningham, reeve of Hul lett argued that council should be looking at ways to reduce bureau cracy, not increase it. He hoped the county’s role in waste management would continue to diminish. “If we take recommendation 6 (of the report), the county would continue to monitor us (local landfills).” SIENNA Reduced to 1995 ASTRO VAN CS EXT.
