MEL CRAIG
Mel Craig died suddenly at
Bluevale, Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997
while chatting with friends.
He was the beloved husband of
Donna (Armstrong) who
predeceased him Jan. 22, 1997.
Memories of a Dad who was
always there when needed will be
cherished by his children: Kathy
and Frank Workman of Grey Twp.;
Mary and Larry Martin of
Bamberg; Pat and Don Nolan of
Walton and Margaret and John
Carswell of Teeswater.
Mel took great pride and interest
in the lives of his grandchildren:
Lisa, Cheryl, Colleen and Jennifer
Carswell and Julie (Mrs. Ron)
Walker; Mark, Michael, Tim and
Pam Nolan; Chris and Michelle
Martin; Peter and Craig Workman.
Great-granddaughter Rebecca
Walker always brought a smile to
his face.
He was the brother-in-law of
Hazel Craig of Auburn, Mary and
Jack Taylor of Belgrave and Tom
and Joan Armstrong of St.
Augustine.

parents Jim and Annie Craig, his

Mel was bom Sept. 28, 1918 in

on the family farm near St.
Augustine and attended school at
Donnybrook Public School.
Mel was in the army when he
married Donna Armstrong in 1943
and established a home in London,
ON. While in the army Mel
received training in motor
mechanics.
In 1945 with two daughters they
moved to Auburn where Mel joined
in partnership with his father in the
Craig sawmill. By 1952 the family
had grown to include four
daughters and they moved to a farm
on the 2nd lind of Morris Twp.
where Mel farmed and worked
part-time for the township of
Morris as a grader operator and
later at McGavin's Farm Equipment
in Walton.
In 1975 Mel retired and he and

his retirement he was well known
in the area as the person who could
turn a new rung for your chair or
mend and restore wooden items. If
a useful item could be crafted from
wood he was always interested in
making it. Wooden plate frames,
fem stands, birdhouses, lamps,
specialty cabinets, and much more
grace the homes of his friends and
family.

member of Carlow Morningstar
Masonic Lodge and later an
affiliate of Wingham Masonic
Lodge. He was active in Bluevale
United Church, served a term as the
Morris representative on the board

group. He spent many pleasant
peaceful hours fishing with
neighbours, friends and
grandchildren.
