MUSIC REUIEUJ
New CD, a surprise for non-fan
By Ashley Gropp
Green Day - Nimrod
Release dale: Oct. 14
Although I myself am not
exactly fond of any of
Greenday's previous albums, I
find myself enjoying most of the
music on Nimrod, their third
major label release.
To my disgust my brother has
been a Green Day fan since he
first heard Longview from their
major label debut Dookie. He
collected everything he could
find: their indie-label music,
their newest releases, and their
bootlegs.
I found them an annoying
band that played the same song
14 or so times on each CD.
Obviously then, he was
looking forward to Nimrod
much more than I was. However,
when I first heard the album's first
single Hitchin' A Ride, I tried to
hate it, but I often sang along with
it. I tried to convince myself that
just because it actually sounded
different from the older Green Day
music, that the rest of Nimrod
would be as unique.
I soon found out that it was. On
this release Green Day attempts
everything from ska (on King for a
Day - a look on what life would be
like as a transvestite) to a surf
instrumental (Last Ride In). Some
of their songs remind me more of
music from past decades rather
than the 90s. Hitchin A Ride
seems so out of place among the
alternative chart toppers as it
appears to have come from the
first half of this century, and
Redundant from early 60's
England.
Some of the things that
surprised me the most about
Nimrod were the use of a
harmonica on Walking Alone,
the addition of a brass section
on King For a Day, the variety
in their songs, and one of the
most beautiful ballads I've heard
Good Riddance (Time of Your
Life). Nimrod surprised me as
being a Green Day album even I
could listen to. Good thing, too
because around my house we hear
it several times a day now.

As you all know, for the past
week the teachers in Ontario have
been striking. It does leave students
in a predicament. Often we are
bored and don't know what to do.
Although I don't have all the
answers here are some suggestions
to beat the boredom.
10) Remember to do your
homework that the teachers
assigned you before you got off.
9) Do some volunteer work.
8) Of course, there is always the
good old television, designed to
keep you entertained for hours.
One problem though, most
morning TV shows are talk
shows. It gets a bit boring hearing
about someone else's problems
7) Get together with some of your
friends and have a strike party.
6) Go to the city and go shopping.
5) Rent a movie.
4) Do recreational activities, take
advantage of afternoon skating or
organize a game of street hockey.
One word of advice; hiking in the
bush might not be a good idea
since it is hunting season for this
week.
3) Get a job. It will save you from
having to help out around the
house or farm.
2) Read a book.
1) If you're really bored you can
always ask your parent to send
you to a private school; the strike
doesn't affect them.
