Pumpkinfest draws huge crowd
Auburn Community Hall was
busting at the seams as parents and
children gathered to attend the
Auburn Horticulture Society's
Pumpkinfest on Monday night,
Oct. 27. Featured this year was the
Haunted House. The squeals of the
children assured the organizers that
this was enjoyed by all who had the
nerve to venture into it.
Apple bobbing proved to be a
wet activity that challenged the
youngsters who tried it.
Many children had the
opportunity to try to eat an apple
off a string. This proved to be more
difficult than it looked.
Over 60 pumpkins were carved
by the children. The originality and
skill of the carvers made judging
of these entries very difficult.
The baking entries once again
proved that there are excellent
bakers living in the area.
Many homes in the area would
have prize winning centrepieces
gracing Hallowe'en tables as was
evident by the quality of the entries
in this category.
Area businesses are once again to
be thanked for their unfailing
support. All the winners took home
prizes that were donated by these
businesses and/or individuals. The
winners of the three door prizes
were first, Gregory Roetcisoender,
one year subscription to The
Citizen', second, Adam Andrews,
Huron County Calendar, donated
by Van Massenhoven Construction;
third, Gerry MacDonald, a plate
donated by "Ceramics by Bess".
The largest pumpkin weighed in
at 187 lbs. and was grown by
Jordan Rutledge. Katie Peesker
grew the medium weight pumpkin
at 129 lbs.
The most unusual shaped
pumpkin was grown by Erica
Sturzenegger.
Popcorn and juice were enjoyed
throughout the evening.
Auburn Horticulture Society,
thanks all the volunteers who
worked tirelessly to make this
year's "Pumpkinfest" such a huge
success.
