Bd. of Education candidates speak out Colleen Schenk With the newly-aligned school boards as of January 1998, Colleen Schenk of Wingham, current Huron County Board of Education trustee is seeking election to the Huron-Perth District School Board #8. The Huron C area includes Wingham, Brussels and the Townships of Morris, Grey, Tumberry and Howick. In seeking her second term, Schenk said the most important issue is to "ensure that our children receive the best possible education which is suitable to each of their needs." Her goal is to "represent the northeast district to the best of my ability by maintaining accessibility, helping and listening to all. With our support, our children can perform to the best of their abilities and have access to all the technology needed to enhance their performance," she said. Schenk says she has enjoyed serving the public and would like the opportunity to face the new challenges. "I believe we must ensure continuity as we merge with the Perth board." She has served as the chair of the Wingham Planning Board, a director for MADD for Huron-Bruce and a director for HELP (Huron Employment Liaison Program. Della Baumgarten A Huron County Board of Education trustee who has served two terms, Della Baumgarten, representative for Howick Twp. is seeking election to the Public District School Board #8, which includes Wingham, Brussels and the Townships of Morris, Grey, Turnberry and Howick. "I feel I can provide continuity between the old board and the new in the transition and I would like the opportunity to work with the new configuration to ensure that the best quality of both parties is maintained," she said. In her effort to maintain quality, Baumgarten said the most important issues are equitable funding and quality accessible public education with local representation and a voice in the decision-making. Baumgarten wants to ensure that local, elected trustees maintain sufficient power to influence policy. Abby Armstrong Abby Armstrong, current Huron County Board of Education trustee for Bayfield and Stanley Twp., is seeking the position of District School Board #8 representative for Huron B, which includes Clinton, Seaforth, Bayfield, Blyth and the Townships of Hullett, McKillop and Stanley. "I am seeking the position because I believe in the principle of public education," she said. "Our public education system has been under constant attack. Committed trustees who can work and communicate with all within the system will be needed to restore public confidence as well as strengthen and rebuild that system." "The most important short-term issue is the need to ensure the best possible transition in establishing district School Board #8. In the long term, we need to increase standards." Armstrong said she will work hard to represent the area, making a particular effort in the new sections of her district. “I feel I will have accomplished this when the electors are familiar with the issues, when we can work together with our students and when the people of this community feel comfortable calling me with their concerns and comments." D.W. Dave Hallman New to the public school governance race, Dave Hallman of Bayfield will be seeking election to represent Huron B, which encompasses Clinton, Seaforth, Bayfield, Blyth and the Townships of Hullett, McKillop and Stanley. Hallman said he would like to have input and hopefully influence the process of improving the quality of education for the students. He would like to see education costs maintained while improving the standard of education for Huron County students. His goal is to provide a good communication network with his constituents so he can reflect the concerns of the community to the school board and the provincial government. Vicki Culbert Vicki Culbert, Huron County Board of Education trustee for East and West Wawanosh and Ashfield Twps. has been acclaimed to the position of representative for Huron A, the district of Goderich and the Townships of Goderich, Colbome, Ashfield, East and West Wawanosh for Public District School Board #8. Culbert, who has served as a public school board trustee for six years, said she wanted be able to meet all the challenges that are ahead. These include such things as bussing, taxpayer issues and meetings, which come with amalgamation. She wants to see how the board is going to deal with everything from board office location to school maintenance. Culbert said she wants to represent taxpayers at a local level, as much as possible, on these concerns and issues. Lynda Horbanuik Lynda Horbanuik is seeking her second term as a school trustee and would represent Huron B, which ihel'udes Clinton, Seaforth, Bayfield, Blyth and the Townships of Hullett, McKillop and ’Stanley. She is currently the trustee for Blyth and Hullett Twp. With the pending amalgamation of the Huron and Perth County school boards, Horbanuik said she wants "to make sure the transition period runs smoothly without affecting the students in our schools." She believes in quality education for every child. "I believe we can deliver that in Huron County," she said. Louise Martin Louise Martin of RR3, Goderich, has been acclaimed to a fourth term on the Huron-Perth Roman Catholic Separate School Board. She represents Tumberry, East and West Wawanosh, Ashfield, Colbome, Hullett and Morris Twps. and Clinton, Goderich, Blyth and Wingham. She. put her name in the ring to "ensure that our children continue to receive excellent Catholic education in these tremendously changing times in the education field," she said. She wishes to ensure that the local Catholic cultural realities, words and issues are maintained, met and protected, in light of increasing centralization of powers to Queen’s Park. Her personal goal is to be of service to, and ensure the needs are met of all partners in education; students, parents, employees and ratepayers.
