Bd. of Education candidates speak out
Colleen Schenk
With the newly-aligned school boards as of January 1998,
Colleen Schenk of Wingham, current Huron County Board of
Education trustee is seeking election to the Huron-Perth District
School Board #8. The Huron C area includes Wingham, Brussels
and the Townships of Morris, Grey, Tumberry and Howick.
In seeking her second term, Schenk said the most important
issue is to "ensure that our children receive the best possible
education which is suitable to each of their needs."
Her goal is to "represent the northeast district to the best of my
ability by maintaining accessibility, helping and listening to all.
With our support, our children can perform to the best of their
abilities and have access to all the technology needed to enhance
their performance," she said.
Schenk says she has enjoyed serving the public and would like
the opportunity to face the new challenges. "I believe we must
ensure continuity as we merge with the Perth board." She has
served as the chair of the Wingham Planning Board, a director for
MADD for Huron-Bruce and a director for HELP (Huron
Employment Liaison Program.

Howick.
"I feel I can provide continuity between the
old board and the new in the transition and I
would like the opportunity to work with the new
configuration to ensure that the best quality of
both parties is maintained," she said.
In her effort to maintain quality, Baumgarten
said the most important issues are equitable
funding and quality accessible public education
with local representation and a voice in the
decision-making.
Baumgarten wants to ensure that local,
elected trustees maintain sufficient power to
influence policy.

trustee for Bayfield and Stanley Twp., is seeking the position of
District School Board #8 representative for Huron B, which

"I am seeking the position because I believe in the principle of
public education," she said. "Our public education system has
been under constant attack. Committed trustees who can work
and communicate with all within the system will be needed to
restore public confidence as well as strengthen and rebuild that
system."
"The most important short-term issue is the need to ensure the
best possible transition in establishing district School Board #8.
In the long term, we need to increase standards."
Armstrong said she will work hard to represent the area,
making a particular effort in the new sections of her district. “I
feel I will have accomplished this when the electors are familiar
with the issues, when we can work together with our students
and when the people of this community feel comfortable calling
me with their concerns and comments."

New to the public school governance race,
Dave Hallman of Bayfield will be seeking
election to represent Huron B, which
encompasses Clinton, Seaforth, Bayfield,

and hopefully influence the process of
improving the quality of education for the
students. He would like to see education costs
maintained while improving the standard of
education for Huron County students.
