Grey Tivp. has 2 coYididcites for reeve
Dale Newman
A familiar face to Grey Twp. politics, Dale Newman, RR3, Brussels, is seeking
the chair of reeve.
Previously Newman spent three years as a councillor and nine years on the
Brussels, Morris and Grey Medical Dental Board, of which he is still a member. He
served on the Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Board for 10 years, six of those
as chairman. As a member of the Brussels Lions Club he has held a variety of
offices up to president.
He has served the public for 26 years as an employee of Bell Canada.
Newman, who lost a bid for reeve in the last election to incumbent Leona
Armstrong, said he decided to run again because "in these changing times I believe
new views and a progressive attitude are needed at both the county and municipal
level.
He lists the amalgamation of local municipalities and the downloading of
provincial services and programs as the most important issue and is concerned
about the effects these things will have on local programs, services and taxes.
The effects of "mega-farm operations" is also an issue.
His personal goals are:
1) To work as a team with council and staff
2) Ensure ratepayers are kept informed on municipal matters
3) Ask ratepayers for input on issues affecting them.
4) To serve the people of Grey in an open way, making Grey a good place to live.
Robin Dunbar
No stranger to politics, Grey Twp. Deputy-Reeve
Robin Dunbar, RR1, Ethel, is seeking the position of
reeve. Dunbar has served one term as deputy-reeve and
two previous terms on council.
Dunbar said he believes Grey Twp. "must have a reeve
who will speak up at Huron County council. Experience
in municipal politics is essential if die reeve of Grey is to
make our needs understood and heard."
He sees the municipality's future as the most important
issue in this campaign. "The question of amalgamation
must be resolved. How the township and county deal
with new costs downloaded by the province will shape
our future. Property owners can't afford a tax increase."
He is making water quality his personal goal. "To
achieve this I am proposing a data base of water samples
be established and testing expanded. The results will
give people the assurance that our water is safe and will
catch any sign of contamination at an early stage."
Helen Cullen
Incumbent Helen Cullen,
RR2, Listowel, is hoping for
her fourth time on Grey
Twp. council.
Her experience will be an
asset in the upcoming term.
"Because of the many
changes coming and because
I have been with council
have a lot of background
information I can do a
job."
Amalgamation will be
biggest issue though she
does think the Nutri
Management Plan may see
some minor changes.
Her personal goal is to
the best job she can for the
citizens of Grey Twp.
Fred Uhler
After a term away, Fred Uhler,
RR3, Brussels, is throwing his hat
back in the political ring of Grey
Twp.
Having served as councillor from
1982-1988, then as deputy-reeve from
1991-1994, Uhler is trying for a spot
on council.
"I feel there is a need to have at
least one farmer's input on council at
this point in municipal politics."
Amalgamation will be a high
priority in the next year and
environmental issues are also a
concern for many Grey Twp.
residents, Uhler says.
He personal goal is to represent all
the people in the township to the best
of his ability.
Graeme MacDonald
Incumbent Graeme MacDonald of
RR2, Brussels, is seeking re-election
to Grey Twp. council.
MacDonald says amalgamation is
the number one issue for him, one
which he wants to see solved "locally
and not by somebody from Toronto."
The second issue he sees facing
municipal politicians is the
downloading of services which have
been "imposed on all municipalities by
Toronto."
Lyle Martin
Lyle Martin, RR1, Ethel, is a
newcomer to municipal politics. He
is seeking his first term as councillor
of Grey Twp.
"I have not been involved in
politics, but served as a director of
the Huron Holstein Club, Huron
Milk Committee, United Breeders
and Gencor."
Martin says he is interested in
local government and believes in
serving the community.
"We need to keep Grey Twp. alive
by keeping the tax base in line and
manage it to support our own roads
and programs.
"Our goals need to be community
driven with a better environment
today for better health tomorrow."

Having served six years as a councillor for Grey Twp.,
Alvin McLellan, RR3, Brussels has been acclaimed as
deputy-reeve.
For nine years he as been a member of the BMG Rec.
board, the past five of those as chairperson. He is also a
member of Brussels Optimists.
McLellan sought the position of deputy-reeve as he
likes to help people, solve problems and serve the
community.
The most important issue facing municipal politicians,
McLellan says, are the potential of huge increases in
property taxes to cover the downloading of services from
the province. "I feel the downloading will not be revenue
neutral."
McLellan's goal is to ensure the taxpayers of Grey
receive the services they need at a cost they can afford."
