Hullett reeve faces 2 challengers Robert Szusz A challenger for the position of Hullett Twp. reeve, Bob Szusz, Londesboro, has served two previous terms as councillor and one as deputy-reeve. He has served on the executive committee of the Central Huron Restructuring Committee, is chairman of Blyth Hullett Landfill and Blyth Arena Board, and sits on the Blyth Fire Board. He says that in the next years there are going to be a lot of tough decisions for municipal politicians to make. "I feel I can help the ratepayers through this with some fresh ideas." The most important issues are amalgamations and restructuring. Taxes should deliver essential services as economically as possible, he said. The changing agricultural picture is another issue. "We are elected by the people to do the best job for them. I will keep a good line of communication open to the ratepayers." "Over the past year we have been involved with restructuring talks and by sitting on the executive of this committee I feel that the concerns of Hullett Twp. will continue to be addressed." Thomas Cunningham Incumbent Tom Cunningham, RR1, Auburn, is looking for a seventh term as reeve of Hullett Twp. A past chair of the Rural Section of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Cunningham has served on a number of county committees, including roads, culture, health and seniors and planning. He has been involved with many farm organizations over the years and is past vice-chair of the Huron Federation of Agriculture. Cunningham feels he can give the type of leadership needed for the tough decisions coming over the next term. With restructuring and dealing with the provincial downloading, Cunningham says, "We as a council, must assure we get the best possible deal for the taxpayers of Hullett." Saying he has no personal goal, Cunningham adds that he considers it a privilege to have served as reeve. "If I have a goal, it would be to keep the taxes as low as possible with all the downloading. As I am a taxpayers, any increase affects me as well." John VanBeers John VanBeers, RR1, Blyth, is a first time candidate for Hullett Twp. council. VanBeers has served on the board of directors for the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. On the Huron Federation he has been chairman of the property and land use and public relations committees. In 1987, the year he was chairman of the crop insurance review committee, he also received the HF A award for outstanding contribution to agriculture. In 1992 he was chairman of HEART committee. The most important issues concerns, he says, are property reform, restructuring and farmers' input in bylaws which affect them. His personal goal is a safe and viable family-oriented community. Doug Hugill A councillor for three years, Doug Hugill has been acclaimed to the post of deputy-reeve. Having served on the Seaforth Arena Board for eight years and the Seaforth Fire Board, Hugill says he sought re election to "continue good government for Hullett Twp. and keep taxes down." With numerous changes expected in the coming term Hugill sees restructuring, amalgamation and downloading from the provincial government as the most important issues over the next few years. His aim for his term as deputy-reeve is to have the best government possible for Hullett Twp. and ensure the current level of services is maintained. Bruce Bergsma Marg Anderson Political novice Marg Anderson, RR1, Londesboro, has thrown her hat into the ring for a seat on Hullett Twp. council. A certified municipal office administrator, Anderson has a long-standing interest in municipal government. She sees the most important issues as amalgamation and provincial downloading and has set her personal goal as ensuring taxpayers' dollars are being spent wisely. Bruce Bergsma, RR1, Londesboro, is seeking re election for HuLlett Twp. councillors. This will be his second term. He has been past president of several orgtanizations over the years. He would like to serve the people of Hullett for another three years. Everything in municipal politics seems to be important issue. "There are so many issues right now, amalgamation and downloading of services that are affecting municipalites and we don't know which direction they are taking us. We have had so little information." Though he has had no political experience, MacNaughton has served Hullett and Colbome, Tuckersmith and West Wawanosh Twps., as chief building official. In that capacity he has attended 98 per cent of all council meetings in the past four years. Restructuring, he say, is the big issue.
