Kids do environmental work
AN INTERVIEW WITH MR.
HARRISON
By Jeremy Leishman
We will be doing a naturalization
of the school yard project and have
applied to the Shell Environmental
Fund for some money. Some of the
activities will be planting trees and
shrubs and building bluebird boxes.
"We will make a butterfly garden
and let the grass and weeds grow"
says principal, Mr.Al Harrison. By
doing this we hope to attract birds,
insects, butterflies and other small
creatures. Children will use this
area for their science classes. We
will be installing a creative
playground on the primary side
next spring. We are raising the
money in co-operation with the
School Advisory Council."
GRADE 8
By Paul Walker
In Grade 8 this year we've been
doing a lot of the three Rs, and
quite a few more!
For language we have been
working out of the Language
Power books, and reading novels.

Madill, have good academic stand

other significant award. He also
received a Big M.
Also, Candice Irwin was present
ed with the Champion Roads
Award, presented to a graduating
student with high academic stand
ings who has been involved in vari

the community, and is entering a
college program.
Irwin also received the Ladies
Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 180 Award which is given
to a student in good academic

Each of us does a novel response
on the 14th and 28th of each
month, and a book talk once every
month.
In math this year it’s been mainly
review, division, addition,
subtraction, multiplication and all
these with decimals. We have also
been doing order of operations and
exponents, and are just beginning
measurement and parts of a circle.
Science has been great! Our main
unit for the first part of the year is
astronomy, and so far we have
studied the beginning of the
universe and telescopes. Our class
took a trip to the ROM to learn
more about the universe, and to
look at some of the exhibits.
We have written various essays
about books we have read, movies
we have seen and quite a few other
topics. We have been learning how
to write paragraphs and how to
break up words. Also, we do a
journal entry once in a while.
In art we have illustrated our art
portfolios and drawn name totems.
We have been learning how to
shade with pastels and how to
overlap large objects in a picture.
While doing all of this, we have
been fundraising for the Quebec
trip. We would like to extend a
warm handshake to all the parent
volunteers who are helping out
with the trip. Some of the
fundraising projects we've had are:
