Tabloid takes new approach to news
By Erin Roulston
"Bat boy found in cave!"
"Cat gives birth to puppies!"
"Girl struck by lightning ages 60
years!"
Those are some of the most
outrageous things I've ever heard.
They are all legitimate headlines
from real tabloid newspapers, The
National Enquirer, The Sun and
many others.
Recently my curiosity got the
better of me and I actually went out
and bought one of these wonderful
publications.
The front page holds the
headline, in giant white letters:
"Kids Who Kill". There's also a
great shot of Kirstie Alley's
cleavage and a picture of Ellen
DeGeneres and her lover: "Inside
Ellen's love nest and the truth about
her plans for a baby."
As I flipped through the pages
and glanced at the stories, I was
rather disappointed. What? No
four-headed cows? Where is Elvis's
love child? There is nothing about
the Virgin Mary's ghost causing a
fatal car collision.
Well, there were some strange
stories that I had my doubts about;
like Ellen and her lover Anne
Heche's plans to have a baby
together (via test-tube). There was
a little piece about some guy that
stole $30 from a kid selling
lemonade and a story about Diana’s
brother being a "phony".
I was very disappointed.
Then I noticed the cover. The
logo on the front
National Enquirer.
What's this?
newspaper with
circulation of any paper in America
have changed their style? What on
earth could have driven them to do
this?
If you remember a little while
back, a woman who had spent her
said The New
Could the
the largest
entire life on the covers of these
tabloids, who was constantly
hounded by newspaper
photographers and journalists, died
tragically. Diana's death was
blamed on the media and The
National Enquirer, the most
famous of all the tabloids, took
most of the blame.
At the time of her death the NE
issue currently on shelves had a
nasty story about the princess's love
affairs. It was taken from the
shelves in most stores.
In an attempt to clear their name
to the world, The NE made an
announcement that all publications
should ban the use of pictures taken
at the scene of the accident by the
paparazzi.
I never imagined that they would
clean up their act. How will The NE
get enough sales if they aren't
trashing celebrities and glorifying
freaks? I wouldn't buy it!
I am amazed that the people
behind this newspaper could be
such heroes. I'm sure that all along
the publisher realized that people's
lives are much more important than
money, but to do something about
it takes a very brave person.
So I send my congratulations out
to the people of The NE for at least
attempting to have a little decency.
And I'm also happy that Elvis can
go to the grocery store without the
whole world reading about it, and
that Bat Boy can watch his
Saturday morning cartoons in peace
and quiet.

New movie, not for the faint at heart
By Mark Nonkes
When I saw an ad for the movie /
Know What You Did Last Summer
in the newspaper, I noticed a small
fine print warning, in the comer of
the ad reading "frightening scenes".
No doubt was it frightening, the
warning should have read: this
movie will have you jumping out
of your skin.
/ Know What You Did Last
Summer is the scariest movie I have
ever seen. I'm sure anyone who has
already seen the movie will agree.
During a scary scene in the
movie, the theatre would just
explode with screams of fright,
bags of popcorn would fly and a
few drinks would spill.
I Know What You Did Last
Summer circles around four friends.
Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) the
girl with the conscience, Helen
(Sarah Michelle Gellar) the town's
newly crowned beauty queen Barry
(Ryan Phillippe) the jock with the
quick temper, and Ray (Freddie
Prinze Jr.) the misfit of the group.
While driving home on a
deserted road from a beach party
the four hit something. Make that
someone. They make a pact to keep
this secret with them to their grave,
then dump the body into the ocean.
A summer later things start to go
wrong. Someone knows what they
did last summer.
The writing of this movie is
fantastic. You should note the
writer of this movie, Kevin
Williamson, also wrote last year's
horror Scream. Williamson makes
the characters seem so real, each is
similar to someone you know. The
movie itself is not like some horror
flicks where someone is resurrected
from the dead or someone loses it
and goes on a wild rampage with a
chainsaw, but more realistic.
This movie is excellent. It is
definitely worth the six or seven
dollars for admission. But there is a
warning for anyone interested in
seeing it: This movie is NOT for
the faint of heart!

Progress reports, shock to students
By Ashley Gropp
They have been completed and
handed to us. Now it's time to
scheme.
Students in secondary schools are
receiving their progress reports
which tell them and their parents
exactly what the results are for the
work (?) they've done in the past
month and a half.
Some of us receive a huge shock
when we first take a look at those
pieces of paper. The odd cheer or
sight of relief is heard among a
chorus of, "My parents are going to
kill me," and "I thought my mark
would be higher than that!"
It seems that after progress
reports, students tend to work a lot
harder - although this usually lasts
a maximum of a week. It's as
though students are scared into
remembering that their actual
purpose of being at school is to
LEARN.
