Tractor pins Atwood teen A 14-year-old Atwood youth escaped serious injury on Oct. 8 after a tractor rolled and pinned him. Willie Friesen was riding on the left fender of a Leyland tractor at 2:50 p.m. on Howick Twp. Cone. Road 'C' with his 17-year-old brother who was operating the trac tor, OPP said. The tractor was proceeding down a hill when it lost power causing it to skid on the roadway. Police said, it was due to the weight of the wagon behind it.The tractor and trailer entered the ditch and flipped over pinning Willy Friesens' legs under the fender. With help from the Gorrie Fire Department and area farmers, Friesen was freed, then taken to Wingham & Dislrict Hospital and kept for observation. He suffered no broken bones. Police said no charges will be laid in the matter. 4~H meets Continued from page 2 texture, tenderness and flavour. When the judging was completed they finally ate the muffins and other goodies that were brought to the meeting. Missy closed the meeting with the 4-H motto. County council briefs There are now two hats in the ring seeking the position of warden of Huron County for 1998. Jack Coleman, reeve of Stanley Twp. announced his candidacy at the Oct. 2 meeting of county coun cil. Earlier, Bill Weber, reeve of Stephen Twp. had announced he would seek the position. Ironically, the two sit side by side in council.*** Council approved a two-per cent wage increase to non-union employees, their first increase since a 1.5 per cent increase in 1993. After that they were under the social contract grant reductions.*** The county will get no further support from the Ministry of Trans portation for replacement of the Black Creek Bridge on County Road 83, which was Hwy. 83 until turned over to the county in April. The county feels the bridge needs to be replaced but in its calculations for compensating counties for upgrading roads turned over to them, the province said the bridge will likely last 10 more years or longer and thus the province will provide no grants for it. In a letter to the county, Al Palla- dini, former Minister of Trans portation, said the Black Creek Bridge was judged by the same standard as other bridges across the province and so his ministry’s deci sion would hold. *** The county will spend up to $10,000 for a video to promote the county in conjunction with the 1999 international Plowing Match at Zurich. The contract was award ed to BoMont Productions of Bay field, headed by broadcaster Bob Mongomery. County council did not support a request from Blyth for a letter of support to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario asking it continue to press for the removal of all education taxes from property. "We would have liked the county to have joined with other counties and major cities," Blyth Reeve Mason Bailey said. He was sure, however, AMO will continue to press the point. Drugs found in Colborne The discovery of thousands of dollars worth of marijuana, Oct. 10, has put two Colborne Twp. men in custody. Officers from the Goderich detachment of Huron County OPP executed a search warrant at a resi dence near Goderich airport, Friday morning, seizing marijuana with a street value of $8,000 along with growing apparatus. Two adult males have been charged with possession and culti vation. The investigation is continuing.
