Cruising — Fall 1997 Toyota’s new line off in a new direction By Janice Becker Citizen staff With the introduction of the Sien­ na minivan for 1998, Toyota has started in a new direction for the line. By combining the standard fea­ tures of a minivan with the style and options available on sedans, Toyota plans for the Sienna to attract both the traditional minivan customers as well as those accus­ tomed to owning cars. The car company took the best features of the two lines in design­ ing the Sienna. From the car came: perfor­ mance, handling and braking; sleek contours; improved body rigidity and fuel economy and a driver-oriented cockpit with sporty gauges. The contributions from the mini­ van model were: high driving position; convenience of various passenger seating arrangements; tough body structure with a variety of safety features, available dual sliding doors and increased interi­ or size and cargo room. The exterior of the minivan has been designed to be attractive to the eye, yet functional and eco­ nomical. The sporty styling is emphasized by the aerodynamic shape and the two-tone paint give the vehicle a clean look. While providing ample room for transporting the hockey or ball equipment, and unique options pos­ sible in a minivan, the Sienna inte­ rior offers comforts of the Camry. The Sienna has: front captains chairs, options second-row captains chairs, rear removable reclining split bench, seven-passenger seat­ ing, front and rear room lamps, dual airbags, four-spoke tilt steer­ ing wheel, adjustable front shoulder belt and AM/FM cassette stereo along with many other items. The stalwart Camry also lends many mechanical features to the Sienna, thereby maintaining quality and reliability to which the Toyota customer has become accustom. While retaining the quality of the Corolla, the 1998 model has boen redesigned to improve the standard equipment, performance and safety. The aim of the re-engineering was to create a sporty, yet "value conscious" vehicle.
