Guest speaker talks about wife abuse Living as Christians in a violent society was the theme for the Fall Rally of the Maitland Presbyterial in the Teeswater Presbyterian Church on Sept. 22. Karen Lowe from Women's House of Bruce County was the guest speaker talking about wife abuse. It is not a new problem but there is more known about the violence that is so widespread. Wife assault happens to many women, of all income and education levels from all social classes, religious and ethnic groups. People can help by supporting these women and giving them more information of the opportunities available, Lowe said. Pamphlets can be placed in doctors' and lawyers' offices. As well, volunteers are always needed at the home in Kincardine. Eileen Chambers of Ripley thanked the speaker. Doon hosts holiday celebration Join the villagers and farmers at Doon Heritage Crossroads for an old fashioned celebration of the seasons on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 12, 13 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Carve a pumpkin, help press some cider, stuff a scarecrow and when its all over put your feet up and enjoy a piece of pie. The Friends of Doon will be selling pie, coffee and cider during both afternoons. Horse-drawn wagon rides, music in the church and the prettiest setting in the Waterloo Region make Doon a great family outing for the Thanksgiving weekend. Regular admission.
