Seatbelt campaign set to begin
All across Ontario, the Ministry
of Transportation will be holding
this year’s seatbelt campaign from
Oct. 4-18. Schools, police, health
and injury prevention professionals
will be spreading the message that
seatbelts save lives.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, student peer
mentors from Goderich District
Collegiate Institute and F. E.
Madill Secondary School in
Wingham will take part in the
provincial SEATBELT CHAL
LENGE. For two hours, volunteer
students will keep track of the
number of drivers wearing and not
wearing seatbelts.
Last year, Goderich scored 70
per cent and Wingham scored 67
per cent. The provincial rate was 84
per cent. More than a challenge, the
purpose of the event is to raise
awareness of the importance of
buckling up.
The Ontario Provincial Police
will also be conducting a seatbelt
compliance observation count
including a check for safe
infant/child car seats. This will be
followed by a two-week safety blitz
with officers assigned daily. Motor
vehicle occupants who are not
buckled in will be charged.
For more information, contact
Corporal Shawn Johnson at 524-
8314.
Rural Response for Healthy
Children and Huron County Health
Unit are also promoting infant/child
car seat safety. As well as public
information displays, there will be
a volunteer training day on Oct. 16.
Over the next year, trained
volunteers will assist at car seat
clinics throughout the county. The
first car seat clinic will be at Robert
Evan's Chev Olds in Goderich on
Nov. 8. For further information,
contact 482-3416 or 1-800-265-
5184 ext. 234.
Crashes can happen anytime,
regardless of how good a driver
thinks they are. In 1994, more than

killed in vehicles in Ontario. Those
collisions occurred on trips to the
grocery store, to work and to drop a
child off at daycare or school. It is
vital that children are protected by
using a child seat whenever
travelling in a vehicle.
In the 20 years since Ontario first
introduced sealbelt legislation,
usage has risen over 20 per cent
from 71 per cent in 1976 to over 92
per cent by 1996. During that time,
it is estimated that 5,000 lives have .
