The Citizen, 1997-10-01, Page 3Making a contribution The children of Blyth Public School did their part in raising funds for cancer research by participating in the Terry Fox Run last week. As first time participants, the school raised approximately $104. Autumn walk along the Blyth Greenway Trail The Steering Committee of the Blyth Community Greenway Project will be hosting the second annual Autumn Walk along the Greenway Trail on Saturday, Oct. 4. The guided tour begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Butterfly Garden located behind Bainton's Old Mill. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend. During the walk members of the Greenway Steering Committee will be highlighting the work that has been completed on the project this year and outlining activities planned for 1998. The community groups participating in the project have been invited to attend. Following the walk the Blyth Lions Club will be holding a barbecue and providing refreshments for everyone who participates. This year the Autumn Walk coincides with Hike Ontario Week. About 30 Blyth Swinging Seniors sat down to a delicious potluck dinner in the Blyth Memorial Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 24. President Lawrence Plaetzer called the meeting to order. Members opened the meeting by singing O Canada with Phyllis Boak at the piano. A lively sing­ song followed led by Harv McDowell and Vera Badley. Happy Birthday was sung to Doris Hicks and Feme Howatt for their August birthdays and to Janet Lawrie, Jean Nethery, Jim Walsh, Mary Warwick, Edgar Howatt for their September birthdays. Those celebrating wedding anniversaries were Edgar and Feme Howatt (61st), Jim and Elsie Walsh and Bill and Isabelle Craig. The usual reports were read and adopted. An invitation to the Zone 8 Greenway Project invites everyone to come out on Oct. 4 and explore the scenic Greenway Trail. Help protect the environment Reduce, reuse and recycle Annual Rally of the United Senior Citizens of Ontario was received. This will be held in Grand Bend on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Legion. A donation of $25 will be given to the Wingham Day Care Centre. The next meeting will be Oct. 22 with Londesboro Seniors as guests. Jean Nethery introduced the guests, Gwen McKellar and Louise Hayter from Zurich. They are field representatives from Zone 8. They like to visit the different societies to tell them what is taking place at headquarters. They are concerned with the quality of life, drug plans, hearing aids, pension plans, etc. for all seniors.
