Sports Uhrig fires no-hitter for Tigers The Brussels Tigers opened the second round of the Huron County .Fastball League playoffs against the Exeter Braves with a 2-0 shutout. The game remained scoreless until the fourth when Todd Uhrig led off with a homerun to centre to give the Tigers the only run they would need. The Tigers would add an insurance run in the fifth as Greg Fritz stroked a one-out single, then was cashed in on a Tim Fritz RBI double. For the Tigers T. Fritz was three for four with Fritz reaching with two hits. Uhrig pitched a great game by allowing no hits and only two walks while striking out 16 Braves. In game two the Braves got off to a quick start by scoring four first- inning runs and adding another four in the second to chase Tiger starter Doug Conley and lead 8-0 after one and a half innings. The Tigers tried to get back into the game by scoring three in their second at bat. Hits by Uhrig, Brian Niell, and Ron Strome were cashed on an RBI by Doug Shaw and a two RBI double by T. Fritz. The Tigers pushed across a run in the fourth on Fritz's single and a Murray Pipe double, one more in the fifth on an Uhrig double and a Strome RBI double to make it 8-6 after six innings. The Tigers scored two more in the seventh to get within a run as PeeWee Girls tourney Gotcha! TFA's third base player Tina Hoelscher makes the grab in this play against Walton on Saturday. Walton won this one, then went on to beat the Bookies for the A. Water Rats defeated TFA for the B, while the Gators downed the Bombers for the C. Bowlers play last tournament of season The Brussels Lawn Bowling Club held its last tournament of the season, Thursday, Sept. 4 spon­ sored by Helen Hetherington for Associated Planners. Hetherington and president Brenda Perrie opened the tourna­ ment at 1:30 and wished the 36 competitors well. Jim Coultes, drawmaster gave the rules. The sponsor and drawmaster gave out the prizes. Winners were: first, Stuart and Helen Bryans, Mitchell three wins, 41; second, Ross Pepper and Frances Tuer, Mitchell, three wins, 39; third, Neil and Edna Bell, Sea­ forth, two wins, 46; fourth, Gerald Gibson and Yvonne Knight, two wins, 40; fifth, Doug and Thelma Kidd, Atwood, two wins, 38; sixth, John and Mickey Kuindersma, Stratford, two wins, 38; seventh, Cal Cressman and Naomi Bru- bacher, Elmira, two wins, 36; eighth, Jack and Marie Muir, Seaforth, two wins, 27; consolation, Len and Ida Patterson, Harriston. A hot casserole supper was served by the Brussels ladies between the second and third games. The Carter tournament which was to have been held Aug. 20 was cancelled due to the weather. On Saturday, Aug. 16 the Hullett PeeWee girls from Londesboro, travelled to Holmesville for their year-end tournament. With eight teams competing, Hullett captured second place with A runner-up medals. Hullett won their first game against Holmesville II, 18-8. Tiffany Reinhart, Jody Godfrey and Leanne Jamieson combined to pitch 13 strikeouts. Reinhart hit a grand slam in the fifth and Melanie Hiuser hit a homer in the third to pull ahead of the Holmesville team and put the team into the A Division. Hullett won their second game 7- 5 against Goderich I, after a 30- minute rain delay. Godfrey, Jamieson and Reinhart were pitching. Their third game was against Squirts need win Eliminated in Tri-County play, the Blyth Squirts are now focussing on WO A A finals as they are down two games to one against Mildmay. Blyth’s Tri-County season ended Sept. 1, after losing two straight to Wingham in the playoff series. Blyth hitters in this 8-6 effort were Mark Caldwell, Jamie Ross, Korey Machan, David Kelly, Trever Continued on page 13 Holmesville I vying for the A championship. Unfortunately due to many overthrows and the pitcher tiring, the Hullett team had a very upsetting loss to the Holmesville team losing 14-9 after beating Holmesville both times during the season and finishing in first place in regular season play. The girls are finishing the season with a camping trip and a trip to Conley scored on an Uhrig homer. However, the comeback fell short as Exeter pitcher Brad Borland retired the next three to preserve the win. Uhrig was four for four at the plate with Neill reaching base on three occasions. Conley started and was relieved by Uhrig in the third who allowed no runs. The third and deciding game is Tuesday night in Exeter. Congratulations to Tiger pitcher Uhrig who was part of the silver medal winning Owen Sound Tiremen at the recent Canadian fastball championship in Victoria B.C. The winner of the Tiger glass bat draw was Krista Hasting of Brussels. B champs Wonderland with the money they raised from selling chocolate bars and almonds. Team members were: Liz Ross, Beki Brandon, Melissa Snell, Kristin Oster, Tiffany Reinhart, Melanie Hiuser, Leanne Jamieson, Mandy Dunbar, Jody Godfrey, Jenny Ritchie and Lindsey Howitt.
