Blyth’s fight now in AMO’s hands
The Blyth council fight for a
change to the collection of educa
tion taxes is now in the hands of the
Association of Municipalities of
Ontario (AMO).
In reporting to council at the
Sept. 2 meeting, about the AMO
conference held in Toronto the
prior week, Blyth Reeve Mason
Bailey said the resolution to have
education taxes removed from
property passed with no opposition
from the 1,400 delegates in atten-

Clerk-Treasurer John Stewart
announced to Blyth council at the
Sept. 2 meeting, that all the decora
tive street lights were installed and
now in use.
In response to inquiries from res
idents regarding a ceremony, coun
cil said the Blyth Business
Association should initiate such an
event. Council would participate if
asked.
A motion was passed to allow the
removal of three streetlights along
Queen Street between Drummond
and Westmoreland. These lights
will be used for the Greenway pro

dance.
The passage of the resolution
gives AMO and ROMA (Rural
Ontario Municipalities Organiza
tion), which passed the resolution a
few weeks ago, the authority and
responsibility to proceed in co-ordi
nating all municipalities in Ontario
in collectively discontinuing the
collection of education taxes from
all property owners, said a council
press release.
Council agreed to a suggestion
from Bailey that a final letter from
council go to all municipalities,
thanking them for their support of
the campaign and encourage them
to actively generate momentum in
implementing the resolution.
Special mention was made by
Bailey of the support shown by
Toronto Mayor Barbara Hall, who
said, "Let's do it together. Let's do
it now."
