Council accepts sidewalk tender The band plays on Members of the Brussels Legion Pipe Band warmed up prior to their performance at the Thresher Reunion in Blyth this past weekend. Brussels PS news BPS students meet new staff By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff After some discussion, Brussels council accepted the lowest tender for sidewalk improvements to the east side of Tumberry Street in the downtown core and to the west side from Smith Lane to Huronlea. Morris Twp. will pay the cost for the portion of the sidewalk which lays in their municipality. The three tenders were opened at the Sept. 8 meeting. The first was from Bill Scott Construction in the amount of $20,900, with A gravel jo be applied at $11.35 per yard. Of this amount $5,200 was to come from Morris. The second tender was from H&R Carpentry, owned by Henk Vandenbroek, Brussels in the amount of $17,133.57 with gravel at $12 per yard. The Morris portion was estimated at $4,200. The third tender, from Nicholscn Concrete in St. Marys was $22,375.30 from which Morris would pay $5,483.75. A gravel would be supplied at $14 per yard. While noting that the lowest ten der was also a resident of the vil lage, councillors did express some concern as they did not know the type of job the contractor did. "With Bill Scott we know what we'll get," said Reeve Gord Work- ’ man. "You don't have to watch him to see how it will be done." "We've got to give him a chance," said Councillor Greg Wil son. "If it's not right it will be done again until it is." The tender was accepted unani mously. 9th Annual Fishi Fry Brussels Legion Sunday, September 14th Good Luck at College John Vakkters By Chrissy Mason and Nicole Mastnak Brussels Public School has been very busy this past week with many new staff and students. We would like to welcome Mrs. Regier who teaches the Grade 7/8 class and music; including band, Madame Anguish who teaches French, Mrs. Iarusso who is our new librarian, and Abi Corbett who is our new custodian. We are very grateful to have them with us. The school has started intramural soccer for boys and girls, Grades 4- 8. We have also begun cross country running for Grades 4-8 as well. Thanks to those who are participating. From Mrs. Douma's Grade 1 class Brianne Wheeler says, "I like my class, especially working with numbers and going to gym." Joel Wilkinson tells us that he likes his new teacher. The Grade Is are looking forward to a good year. Ms Anonech compliments her Grade 2 class on their very good reading! He approached council two months ago asking if there was some solution that could be found. At that time it was noted that the shop, which was built before Pennington owned it, had been built tocflow and should never have had a building permit issued for it. Council at that time felt that there was little they could do but would Continued on page 10 9-1-1 numbers set By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff The re-numbering for 9-1-1 is complete. Now Brussels homeown ers have to get their act together. Clerk-Treasurer Donna White told council at the Sept. 8 meeting that if the correct house number are not used there will be penalties for residents. "9-1-1 is a benefit, but it won't work if the numbers aren't used. We regret any work or cost for some of the residents, but it will be worth it," she said, explaining that there are a few homeowners who will have to purchase new numbers. She added, however, that where possible, the staff had tried to keep at least one number the same as the previous one. Numbers must not be obscured and must be fixed to the main entrance. Each number must be a minimum of five inches in height. Anyone with numbers smaller than that will have to replace them, she said. Letters will be sent to residents explaining the changes and giving them a deadline to get their num bers on. "They must all be up by Jan. 1. We've got to be ready. Everyone has to participate in 9-1- 1."
