Ford tractors a tradition for Lucknow-area family
Family tradition
The joy of restoring and working with old tractors is realized by several members of the Hendriks family. Henry Hendriks
restored his father's 1950 Fordson, while son, Peter has a budding interest in John Deere. Daughter Kara goes along
for the ride.
By Janice Becker
Once the dozer arrived in Canada, it was
used for some time on his brother's farm and
at tractor pulls before it was painted and
restored.
At the tractor pull is where one is most
likely to find Hendriks during the Huron
Pioneer Thresher Reunion and Hobby Show
as he has been looking after the upkeep of
the track for many years, with his Fords
leading the way.
Hendriks has also competed in tractor
pulls, but says Blyth and Dungannon are
only two of the few places where pulling is
still done with machinery in stock condition.
"It is tough to compete with the (modifieds)
so I work to promote keeping tractors in
stock condition."
But Hendriks interest goes beyond just the
full-size Fords. He has a large selection of
models, including one from England as well
as a complete collection of Dupont collector
video tapes which feature all kinds of
tractors.
Of his Fords, Hendriks says, "there are not
as many as the "red and green", but that
makes them more special."
Breaking with family tradition, Hendriks
son Peter, seven, seems to be drawn to the
"green" as he has a John Deere lawn tractor
which he runs for hours, says his father.
Peter is also on-hand to help his father
with any work needed to be done on the
machinery.
Hendriks and his wife, Annette, have two
children, Peter, and Kara, three.
From the 1950 Fordson E27N Major to the
smallest model, Henry Hendriks of RR7
Lucknow, is surrounded by Ford tractors.
It all began for Hendriks when he decided
to restore the 1950 Fordson which had once
been used by his father for farming, but had
sat neglected for years.
The uniqueness of the tractor is soon
discovered when one tries to drive the
machinery. It is an English model so the
clutch is on the opposite side to North
American models.
"These tractors were brought over between
1945 and 1952 and sold as regular tractors,"
he says.
Being involved in both farming and
general equipment repair, Hendriks soon had
the old machine up and running and was
adding more equipment in need of a skillful
hand, to his collection. He currently has a
1923 and 1934 Ford waiting for some
attention.
One of Hendriks more interesting pieces is
another European model, a Ford bulldozer
which a relative found in Europe. "I bought
it from a picture," he says.
