The Citizen, 1997-09-03, Page 9Shutter Bugs learn tricks Aug. 7 from 6:30 until 9 p.m., the Ethel 4-H Shutter Bugs learned the tricks in photography. After Lorraine Blake got the students going with the 4-H pledge and Michelle Dewit read the minutes, they went over a lot of information about special "FX". The students learned that P.T. Barnum was the man who started the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Bantam Girls end season The Brussels Bantam Girls combined with the Belgrave Bantam Girls to form one team this year. They were helped throughout the season by two players from the Bluevale area, Cathy Adams and Lori Bridge, who had played the previous season. This combination worked very well, said Coach Elwin Garland. Throughout the season the girls played consistent softball. As a result of their work they placed third in the northern division of Tri County and fifth overall. The results allowed them to enter the A division playoffs against Gowanstown. They split the first two games and in the last game of the best of three series were edged out in a 3 - 2 ball game. "Despite the final result the girls played fine softball/' said Garland. Special thanks to the PeeWee girls who played for the Bantams during the season. These included Laura Meier, Vickie Black, Jody Semple, Nicole Mastnak and Lisa Black. Crusaders on leave The Brussels Crusaders, four time Senior A Champions, have taken a one-year leave of absence from the WO A A hockey program. The decision, made within hours of the scheduling deadline, was based on the uncertainty of the number of players willing to commit to the Crusaders. Last season the Crusaders were forced to cancel a game at the bus stop due to a shortage of players and played several games below or with the league minimum of skaters allowed, including two playoff trips to Wiarton with 10 bodies. Finances were not an issue as travel expenses would have been greatly reduced due to the geographic realignment of the league for regular schedule. Brussels would have played in the West Division with Mildmay, Teeswater, Lucknow, Ripley, Goderich, Clinton, Milverton, Wellesley and Tavistock. The Wingham Canadettes are very fortunate to have acquired someone with such a wide variety of expertise and are looking forward to a very exciting year. Barnum said that "you could fooi all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time." For all those people who have a camera, here's your chance! Fancy equipment is not necessary to take trick pictures, the 4-H students found out, just an active imagination and an understanding of perspective. The students had a chance to go out around the Grey Twp. shed to try out what they learned with their cameras. For example, they had someone "crush" a building with his/her foot, had someone lie on the sidewalk and "climb" a rope up the side of a building. The leaders got a kick out of watching the students try their creative ideas. If anyone is interested in seeing the 4-H students pictures, come to the Brussels fall fair where they will be proudly displayed. BE ON THE LOOK OUT... School's back in session and in the excitement of the new school year, many school-age children, especially the young ones, may forget to look both ways when crossing the street or exiting the school bus. That leaves it up to you as a driver, to be extra careful around schoolyards, neigh bourhood play areas, and departing school buses. So remember...when you see yellow, be sure to see red - as in red alert. Let's all slow down and give our children the chance they deserve. CODE OF CONDUCT FOR STUDENTS 1. Arrive at your pick-up point on time. Bus scheduling is such that the drivers cannot wait for pupils who are late. 2. Take you seat promptly and remain seated until you arrive at your destination, unless otherwise directed by your driver. 3. Hold books and lunch boxes on your lap or on the floor at your feet, never in the aisle where they may trip someone. 4. Skates, when carried on a school bus, must have skate guards or protective material in place. 5. Keep your arms and head inside the vehicle at all times. 6. Never interfere with emergency doors/exits or any part of the vehicle equipment. 7. Unnecessary disturbances (opening of windows, wrestling, eating, smoking, obscene language or any other form of misbehaviour) will not be tolerated at any time. 8. Obey directions and instructions of the driver and/or bus patrol promptly. 9. Refrain from talking to the driver while the bus is in motion, except in case of an emergency. 10. Never leave the bus at any stop other than that predetermined by school or parental permission. 11. Riding a school bus is a privilege! This privilege can be withdrawn.
