THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3,1997 Belgrave PeeWee Boys Tri-County champs Blyth Bantams win Tri-County A Belgrave PeeWee Boys captured the A championship in Tri-County league play last week. After winning the game Aug. 18 against Aubum by a score of 21-4, which gave them that best of three series, the team went on to defeat Belmore in two straight. The first game in Belmore ended in a 15-11 score. A solid first, with runs scored by Devin Moffatt, Craig Marks, Justin Campbell, Kent Readman, Kent McPherson, Matt Walker and Travis Hopper, gave Belgrave a commanding lead, despite Belmore's scoring of three. Play leveled out for a time, with Devin Moffatt the only runner to cross the plate for Belgrave in either the second or third, while Belmore failed to dash in any. Things got a little scary after Belmore shut down their visitors in the fourth, then launched an attack that resulted in three runs scoring. Belgrave bats were still quiet in the fifth, while their hosts added another, bringing them within one. As they have done for most of the season, Belgrave countered with a huge last inning to give them the win. Myron Hussey, McPherson, Walker, Jason Fear, Squirts take WOAA semi-final In game one of the Tri-County Squirt Boys semi-finals, the Blyth team took the loss. In spite of consistent hitting by many of the players, the squad fell short by an 8-6 score. Down 8-2 going into the fourth, the team made a strong effort, but managed only four runs. Trever Koehler, Kirk Stewart, Andrew Toll and David Kelly all went two for three while Raymond deBoer, Cole Slewart and Jamie Ross were two for two. The boys were far more success ful in WOAA play as they swept their semi-final against Fullarton. Blyth tromped on their opponent, in the Aug. 22 match, going up 10- 3 by the end of the third. While holding Fullarton to only two additional runs, Blyth scored three through the fourth and fifth and topped off a strong game with four in the sixth. The final was 17-5. Kelly went five for five, while Canadettes welcome coach The Wingham Canadettes are welcoming a new coach. Sheri Lotrijan, 24, started baton and dance lessons when she was four years old. Two days later, Belmore came to town and put the fans on the edge of their seats as the two teams played an 8-7 nailbiter. The visitors were shutdown in the first, while Belgrave cashed in Readman and Hussey to give them a narrow lead. Belmore answered in the second with seven, then closed the door on their hosts. Belgrave pitching stopped the onslaught for the next three innings, while the home team's offense kept the pressure on. Fear, Campbell, McPherson and Readman scored in the third, while Hopper and Moffatt crossed in the fourth. This victory gave the team the Tri-County A championship. This triumph came just after a disappointing WOAA series loss to New Dundee. The team travelled there Aug. 19 and were handed their second defeat in the best of three series by a narrow 5-4 score. Crossing the plate for the visitors were Marks, Moffatt, twice and Fear. Cole Stewart, Mark Caldwell and Koehler were four for five. Blyth hitters were once again a force as they struck for 15 during the Aug. 26 game. Though Fullarton came out swinging with three runs scored in the first, Blyth evened the tally, then held them to one run through the sixth. Blyth continued to push runners across the plate, one in each of the second and third, three in the fourth and seven in the sixth. Fullarton's attempted comeback in the sixth was not enough, pulling them to a seven-run deficit. Kelly was four for four, Koehler, three for three; Ryan McClinchey, two for three and Micah Loder one for one. Blyth advances to the finals against Mildmay. The Blyth Bantam softball club completed a successful season by winning the Tri-County championship Wednesday night in Blyth, defeating Wingham. After a slow start, Blyth caught fire near the end of the schedule and carried it on throughout the playoffs. Their first playoff series was against first place finisher Goderich. After splitting the first two games, winning 8-4 and losing 7-0, Blyth travelled to Goderich for the deciding game. Deadlocked at three in the last inning, Blyth's Dean Wilson drove in Jamie Black to give Blyth a 4-3 win. Tyler Stewart had a two-run Bantams take B The amalgamated Bel- grave/Brussels Bantam Boys team finally seemed to have found their groove. After an inconsistent start the team ended the regular season with some of their best ball, then came up with three solid victories over Ethel to take the Tri-County B championship. A skeleton squad came away with a respectable victory in the first match-up in Brussels, Aug. 19, despite the absence of several regular players. PeeWee call-ups, Matt Kroll, Rob McKercher and Bryce Wedow filled in admirably for the home boys. Despite some key hits and solid defensive plays by the Ethel squad, Belgrave/Brussels captured this one by a narrow 14-12. Two days later the Ethel team hosted. Playing with just nine players, the Belgrave/Brussels squad was also for the first time, getting a glimpse of PeeWee pitcher Rob Kerr. After a slow start, with Kerr sitting down the top of the order, the team got down to business and came away with a convincing 10-4 win. Belgrave/Brussels' Terry Nichol gave a solid performance on the mound, aided by some good defense. The third contest in this best of five series was a 26-3 blowout last Wednesday night in Belgrave. It was a hit parade played out in the fog as Belgrave/Brussels bats were hot. The evening was highlighted by homers from Myron Hussey, Tom Pfeiffer, Ryan Fear and Joshua Gropp. With Nichol suffering from a sore arm, the team recruited Belgrave PeeWee Justin Campbell, who pitched a complete game in his first appearance with the Bantam Boys. single and John Kochis, a run scoring hit for the winners. Stewart went the distance at the mound with a four-hitter. Blyth then met second place finisher Wingham in the finals. In the first game, Blyth scored five runs in the fourth inning and hung on for a 5-3 victory. Nathan Hubbard scored a two-run homerun, Stewart had a two-run single and Kochis a run-scoring single for the Blyth runs. Shawn Bromley and Stewart shared the pitching duties with Drew Comeil behind the plate. Game two was in Blyth Wednesday night and proved to be a real nail biter.
