The Craigs assumed ownership of the historic inn, Aug. 20. By Janice Becker Citizen staff Combine the cooking skills of one pair and the community spirit of another family and one comes up with the team which has taken over the operation of the historic Walton Inn. "We never had any intention of running the restaurant," says Graeme Craig, new owner of the inn along with his wife, Helen. That is where the partnership with Grace Campbell and her daughter, Debbie, developed. Campbells will run the restaurant Monday through Friday, with Grace looking after her catering business on Saturday. The Craigs, with son, Michael and a little help from daughter Shannon, will look after other aspects of the business. Michael will work around the restaurant during the week, helping stock supplies, cleaning, cutting the grass and doing some maintenance work. Shannon has been on hand, serv ing customers and cleaning until she returns to university. As for the parents, Helen and Graeme will cook up the breakfast for their bed and breakfast guests on the weekends and deal with their needs. For anyone looking for some thing special, Graeme will be flip ping pancakes, his specialty, the second Tuesday of each month, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. "This is a community-based busi ness and it will be a family pro ject," says Graeme. "We are very pleased with how things have gone so far," says Helen. "There have been very con sistent numbers each day." Ch-Ch-Change y-y-your f-f-furnace MAKE YOUR HOME A COMFORT ZONE Nurses Assoc, pres,-elect goes to battle for patients "Many hospitals are cutting back on their most important resources - registered nurses," said Judith Shamian of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO). "Ultimately this impacts on the safety and quality of patient care." Dr. Shamian, president-elect of the RNAO, a professional associa tion representing over 13,000 registered nurses in the province, was recently profiled in a major feature article, "RN with a cause," in the September issue of Chatelaine magazine. Shamian, an outspoken crusader for quality patient care, will be the guest speaker at the meeting of the Huron Chapter of the Association on Sept. 8 at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. Shamian has compiled research that shows that the greater the proportion of RNs providing nursing care, the higher the quality of care. These and other research studies have demonstrated that patients in hospitals with a higher number of RNs on staff have shorter lengths of stay, lower readmission rates, fewer complica tions, and, the overall costs are less. "Simply put," said Shamian, "patients chances for positive, healthy and productive hospital stays increase when RNs take care of them. It's not a question of saving jobs. It is a question of supporting safe patient care." RNAO, as the voluntary professional association represent ing a board network of over 13,000 registered nurses in Ontario, is the strong credible voice leading the nursing professional to influence and promote healthy public policy.
