THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27,1997 Well-known Brussels couple celebrates 50 years of marriage Golden couple f\ well-known, longtime community couple, Mary and Murray Huether of Brussels, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends on Sunday afternoon. It was a hot, sunny day 50 years ago, Aug. 23, when Murray Ross Huether and Mary Louise McDon­ ald were married. The ceremony, which was officiated by Rev. Gor­ don Hazelwood of Walton United Church, took place at the century farm in the stone house of the bride's family. Bom in Grey Twp. just north of Walton, Mary was the daughter of the former Mary Edna Knight and James Roy McDonald. Her groom, who was also from Grey Twp., bom on Cone. 12, one mile east of Cranbrook, was the son of the for­ mer Ethel Strachan and Dan Huether. The couple were attended by Dorothy (Turnbull) Lawless, then of Brussels, now of Burlington, Morgan Cameron, Cranbrook, now of London and Kathryn (McTag- gart) Schaeffer, Brussels, now of Stratford as flowergirl. Elva Wilbee of Walton was the pianist. Following a honeymoon trip to Honoured In honour of Mary and Murray Huether’s 50th wedding anniversary, and in recognition of Mary Huether’s lifetime of teaching and dedication to the students of Huron County, the family of Don and Marilyn McDonald sponsored and dedicated the purchase of a Second Step Violence Prevention Kit for Brussels Public School. Second Step, a social skills curriculum, builds self-esteem and teaches children to change the attitudes and behaviors that contribute to violence. Mary Huether, spent the majority of her years as a teacher in the primary division of Brussels Public School where this particular kit will be used. Kitchener, Niagara Falls and Toronto, the newlyweds returned to Cranbrook where they lived for 12 years. For the past 38 years they have resided at 21 Flora St. in Brussels. Mary was employed at various schools in Grey, Morris and McKil- lop Twps. as a teacher before com­ ing to Brussels Public School 21 years ago. She taught mainly in the Grade 2 classroom. Among the many students taught by Mary were her daughter Joan and her grand­ daughters Sandra and Sheri Huether. She retired from teaching in 1987. Murray farmed on the home farm, worked at the egg grading station in Cranbrook before the family bought their own business in Brussels, Huether’s Produce in 1959. After selling it, Murray began working at Huron Produce in 1970, then at the new liquor store when it was built on Brussels main street in 1975. He was one of two employ­ ees, there, then in 1984 was named manager of the Teeswater Liquor Store where he remained for four years until retiring. In addition to their busy careers, the Huethers also raised four chil­ dren. Brian, who works on road construction, and his wife, Dianne live in Brussels and have two daughters, Sandra and Sheri. David and his wife Angela have two sons, Jeffrey and Kevin. Resi­ dents of Brampton, David teaches at John Turner High School. Daughter, Joyce Tipple and her husband Roger have a son, Jonathon, and a daughter, Sarah. Joyce is a nurse. The family lives in Burlington. Joan Ritchie lives in Markham with her husband Gary, son Christopher and daughter Kaitlin. Joan is an accountant. Mary and Murray also enjoy many special interests. Mary belongs to the Federated Women Teachers Association of Ontario. She is very active in the Presbyteri­ an Church and has had numerous offices in the Women's Guild of the church. She also taught Sunday School when younger. Mary belongs and takes an active role with the Horticultural Society, has collected for various organiza­ tions and assists the BMG Catering Group. For many years she curled in Brussels, but recently has been curling with the Seniors Country Curling in Wingham. She enjoys cards, dancing, entertaining friends and babysitting her two younger grandchildren and visiting with her older grandchildren. Murray, too, is very involved with the church. For many years he sang in the choir, until recent health problems have forced his retire­ ment from it. He coached boys hockey- and softball, as well as mixed teenaged curling. Today he continues to be an avid baseball fan, both of the local teams and the Blue Jays. He is an avid gardener, particu­ larly interested in roses. Many turned out to honour this special couple at the Brussels Legion on Sunday afternoon. Spe­ cial guests were Mac and Merle McIntosh, Listowel, who were mar­ ried the same day and had celebrat­ ed their anniversary on Saturday night. Murray's oldest sister, Marie McTaggart of Brussels and her family from Stratford and Brussels, Mary's two brothers, Ken and Don of Walton and their families. Other guests attended from Brus­ sels, Walton, Listowel, Detroit, Burlington, Hanover, Toronto, Hamilton, Cambridge, Belleville, Goderich, Blyth, Seaforth, London, Stratford, Kitchener, Alberta and surrounding areas. Highlights of the anniversary cel­ ebration began with a musical pro­ gram featuring numbers by Sarah and Fiona McDonald, Amber Park- Shaw, Katie Kuepher, Crystal Sem­ ple, Peggy Aitchison, Mary Douma, Margaret Mclnroy, Can­ dice and Crystal McLellan and Don McDonald with Margery Huether and Joanne King accompanying the soloists. The eldest grandchild, San­ dra, read a poem composed by Dawn White on behalf of the grandchildren and dedicated to the Huethers. The Legion was beautifully deco­ rated in ivory, sapphire blue and red by Wheels Decorating. Cardiffs catered to a light supper. The couple's daughter Joyce and her husband Roger were pleasantly surprised when they were honoured for their upcoming silver wedding anniversary, which is Sept. 2, the same date that Mary's parents were married in 1925. In honour of the anniversary and of Mary's years of teaching, Don and Marilyn McDonald and family sponsored and dedicated the Sec­ ond Step Violence Prevention Kit designed to enhance social skills for Grades 1, 2 and 3 students at Brussels Public School.
