JR- It was a romp for the Blvth Sauirt Blyth took a 4-1 lead through two.It was a romp for the Blyth Squirt
Boys when they met Teeswater in
WOAA play, Aug. 15 and 18.
Blyth took a 4-1 lead through
two before adding one in the fourth
and opening up the game in the
fifth. The squad struck for eight
runs to go ahead 13-3.
While keeping their opponent off
the board, Blyth topped up the tally
with two in the sixth and six in the
seventh. The final was 21-4.
The bats of several players were
hot as Trevor Koehler went five for
five; David Kelly and Mark Cald
well, four for five and Kirk Stewart
and Ryan McClinchey, four for six.
With one victory in the best-of-
three series, Blyth welcomed
Teeswater to town three nights
later.
Teeswater pushed one across in
the first with Blyth retaliating with
two.
The teams traded one and two-
run innings through the top of the
sixth, resulting in a 6-6 tie.
Blyth took control of the game,
knocking six runs home for a com
manding lead.
Teeswater was unable to mount a
comeback in the seventh.
Stewart and Andy Toll were
three for four with the bat while
Jamie Ross and Kelly were one for
one. One of Toll's hits was a home-
run.
Blyth took the series in two
games and will now advance to the
semi-finals against Fullarton.
A chance
With Ethel's Marc Fischer closing in, a bobble on a line drive ties up Belgrave/Brussels -
Bantam third baseman Mark Kroll, while pitcher Ryan Fear waits anxiously for the outcome-
This was the first game of Tri-County B championship playoffs. The Belgrave/Brussels *
squad leads two games to none in this best of five series. The third game is set for
Wednesday (tonight) evening at 9 p.m. in Belgrave.
St. Pauls takes tournament
In 1976 St. Pauls set a
tournament record by allowing only
one run against enroute to the 'A'
championship in men's fastball
action. Twenty-one years later, St.
Pauls reclaimed the Brussels
tournament championship holding
their opponents to two runs scored
over four games.
The Generals opened the tourna
ment with a 15-1 mercy of the
Brussels Bulldogs, followed by a
16-strikeout performance of Paul
Horenberg to defeat Collingwood
4-1.
Monday John Van Nes pitched
back-to-back shutouts in 2-0 and 4-
0 wins over the London Gators and
K-W Pride for the title.
K-W Pride had edged Sebring-
ville 3-2, shutout Wroxeter 6-0, and
quieted a large hometown crowd
with a 3-1 win against the Brussels
Tigers to reach the finals.
In the consolation the Camlachie
Sox lost their opener 6-1 to Wroxe
ter, then defeated Sebringille 2-1,
Goderich 6-0 and Fullarton 5-4.
Fullarton had reached the finals
with a 6-5 extra innings win against
Monkton and a 5-0 shutout of
Sweaburg after a 5-1 opening
round loss to London.
Opening round scores also
included: Brussels Tigers, 7;
Wingham, 6; Walton, 5; Goderich,

Once again the competition was
amongst the Elite, a fact noted by
the Wingham Colts and Sebring-
ville Sting (both first place clubs in
the Bluewater and South Perth
Leagues respectively), who were
eliminated in two straight losses as
were the Monkton Muskrats, last
year's championship finalists.
Mite season
ends strong
The Brussels Mite Boys finished
the '97 season with a strong effort
against Belmore. The series was the
best two out of three, with Brussels
taking the loss.
Pitching duties were shared by
Philip Wedow, Brent Wheeler and
Kyle Gibson. Scott Philips and
Chris Illipan provided solid defence
as catchers.
Amber Sellers and Claire
Mastnak played double duty at
second base and in the outfield.
Steven Ropp played a sharp game
at third with Jacob Crosby and
Mitchell Ortman sharing short stop
