Theatre review Play, a hilarious look at marriage By Janice Becker Citizen staff It is hilarious, comical and com pletely believable for anyone mar ried more than a few months. Deborah Kimmett, writer and star of Overboard, now playing at The Garage in Blyth, is splendid as the over 20-something married woman, Dorothy Lawton, who has to deal with two children, the house, a full- time job and a husband who seems at times to be patronizingly annoy ing. Lawton finally decides to return to work in an office, after years of freelancing, once her children are both in school. When the office staff is taken on a four-day cruise to “bond as a team”, Lawton must suffer the humiliation of “team activities”, kissing the boss’s behind and dealing with co-workers who have had a tough life as well as those who are simply nauseat- ingly sweet. One glance away from the stage and you are sure to miss a look or an expression which deftly explains the feelings Kimmett is conveying. Her use of voices, posturing and gestures to identify the various characters she encounters is won derful. It is the visual which adds an extra spark to the performance. As Lawton explains her thoughts as she copes with the cruise, we leam about a woman to whom any “woman of the 90s” could relate easily. Her description of an early morning struggle to get the kids ready for school while the husband slowly strolls through the kitchen after an hour in the bathroom is uproarious. When she describes the state of her sex life after several years of marriage, it is sure to hit a note of truth with many married couples, whether husband or wife. She describes her husband kisses, when he encounters her screaming at the kids, as a pity kiss, “like a big, wet fart.” She also describes marriage as a “half murderous state.” A running joke throughout the one- woman production is the explanation as to why her husband has not joined her on the cruise as she is continually told spouses were welcome. The truth is well worth a laugh or two. Though Overboard may appear to be the story of a woman dealing with the stresses of life, it is one which can be related to by anyone Taking the plunge Dorothy Lawton (aka Deborah Kimmett) explores her lite and emotions in the one-woman play, Overboard, now opens The 13th annual quilt show is being presented by the Huron County Museum between Aug. 9 and Sept. 21.
