It was a very successful year for the coach and the kids. They won a few, lost a few and tied some. In the last half of the season they played eight games. On June 26 they played against Clinton Cannibals. Clinton took the lead in the first half but Blyth came on strong and scored two quick goals. The first, scored in a scramble in front of the net by Cody Anderson assisted by Sean Bechtel and Steven VanAmersfoort off a comer kick. The second again scored by Anderson assisted by VanAmersfoort. Clinton scored again to take the lead once more. Greg Bechtel had the opportunity to take a penalty shot after some rough play and scored. Clinton scored two more goals to win the game, 5-3. On July 3 Blyth met Lucknow Optimists on the home field. Blyth tried hard but couldn't manage a goal. Strong defense kept Lucknow's lead to only three goals. On July 10 Blyth was matched against Lucknow Legions. Blyth had no trouble using their talent to outplay the opposition. Jamie Ross got the Blyth team off to a good start with a goal assisted by Brad Bouman and Sarah Slotegraaf. G. Bechtel used his left foot and tricked the goalie in the second goal assisted by Ross and Slotegraaf. The third goal was picture­ perfect, scored by Sabrina Buffinga, assisted by a cross over pass by VanAmersfoort and G. Bechtel. G. Bechtel scored again assisted by the other team and Slotegraaf scored the last goal assisted by G. Bechtel and Jesse Hakkers. The final score was Blyth, 5 and Lucknow, 0. On July 17 Blyth travelled to Goderich to play against Goderich MacDonalds. The teams were evenly matched and played hard. G. Bechtel scored assisted by Candice Bearss and Buffinga. At half time the score was tied at one a piece. In the second half Goderich scored off a penalty shot but Blyth didn't let themselves get down and scored another goal to tie it up, this one again by G. Bechtel assisted by Buffinga and Ross. A make-up game against Clinton Cosmos was played on July 24. Clinton scored a quick goal but Blyth didn't get discouraged. Brad Schmidt scored assisted by Buffinga and G. Bechtel. A second goal by Buffinga was assisted by Bouman. Then a third goal, to prove that Blyth was the better team, by G. Bechtel assisted by Buffinga and Bouman, ended the game. An exhibition game on the home field against Wingham FastFlyers turned out not to be Blyth's best game. Blyth scored a goal by Buffinga assisted by Ross and G. Bechtel. But Wingham was strong and didn't give Blyth any room. Squirt soccer It was an exciting 10-week â–ºoccer season for the Blyth Squirts. With an initial registration of nore than 40 youngsters aged four o eight years, the coaches Veronica )evries, Dave and Diane McLellan ind Brenda Young had a great ipportunity for fun and excitement. Split into teams, according to ige, the Blyth soccer field became m area of activity each Monday light at 6:15. The players played The final score was 5-1 for Wingham. The year-end tournament was held in Goderich, Aug. 7 - 9. Their first game was against Clinton Cannibals. Blyth was keen but so was Clinton. Even though Blyth played well they didn't score on the few opportunities they had. Clinton won 3-0. This meant that Blyth played at 11 a.m., Saturday morning against Flying high It was up and over the hill as flagpersons watched carefully for safe landing during the sixth annual Valvoline TransCan National Motocross Championship, in Walton, _____Aug. 14-17, _______ U-8s end in tie It was a very fast-paced and exciting game in Brussels July 21 as Brussels U-8 III took on Brussels I. Although Derek Koehler played one of his strongest games at centre, and Scott Somerville saved many in net, Brussels I managed to bounce two off the goal post leaving the score 2-0 for Brussels I. Brussels III played again July 28 in Newton against Elma. Andrew Van Vliet did a superb job defending the net. The game ended in a 1-1 tie with Somerville scoring the Brussels goal. season ends GRADUATION Brian VanSteelandt, son of Frank & Dorothy VanSteelandt graduated from the Field Crops Program at Ridgetown College on May 15, 1997. Brian is currently employed at the Hensail District Co­ operative in Seaforth. Love and Congratulations from your family. their games of mini-soccer crosswise on the field. Each week the coaches taught the enthusiastic players the many skills of soccer. The skills were further improved in a game situation each week, as the various teams played their peers. However Wingham had the upper hand having more players and a little more practice. The final score on this one was 6-1 Wingham. This was the final game of the season. Coaches extend a big thank you to the members of this team and their parents for a good season. A thank you also to the fans who came out to support them. It makes winning more triumphant and losing more bearable. Members of this team were Jesse Hakkers, Jamie Ross, Greg Bechtel, Cody Anderson, Sarah Slotegraaf, Candice Bearss, U-18s play final In the final league game Brussels B and Acre T tied 3-3. Rolf Frischknecht scored two goals for the B team. The first goal was set up by a cross from Terry Brown. Terry Nichol scored the third goal. Acre T's Ian Nary way scored two goals and Joel Kellington scored the third goal. In the previous week's game Brussels B travelled to Palmerston and lost a high scoring 9-6 game. In the first half Brussels' Brown scored three goals and Frischknecht scored two goals to Palmerston's two goals. MARTIN - BOWMAN Mountain River Gardens, Grottoes, Virginia, USA was the outdoor setting for the wedding of Gary Martin and Kimberly Bowman, Saturday, July 5, 1997. Aaron Cardiff, Brussels, was best man, with Steve Schrag, a friend of the groom, as groomsman. Rachel Bowman, sister of the bride, was maid of honour and Kim Stauffer, friend of the bride, was bridesmaid. Cousins of the bride, Annalea and Krista Townsend were flowergirls, scattering the outdoor aisle with rose petals. The couple celebrated with their guests at an outdoor noon reception, immediately following the morning wedding ceremony. Gary and Kim had the privilege of celebrating their marriage with Canadian friends, on Saturday, July 12, 1997, at the home of Howard and Alice Martin, Brussels. They are presently living in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Gary is Sports Information Director at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Virginia, while Kim is working at her BA in Elementary Education at the same university. Bradley Schmidt, Sabrina Buffinga, Steven VanAmersfoort, Brad Bouman, Melissa Badley, Drew Crawford and JC Beacom. They were also helped out by players Sean Bechtel, Kerissa VanAmers­ foort, Lauren Bouman and Duane Buffinga. Coach was April VanAmersfoort. In the second half Brown scored once and Palmerston came on with a strong finish with several goals. These two teams meet at Brussels on Wednesday, Aug. 20 in a semi final game. Acre T, the league leader meets Newton in the semi final. GRADUATION RYAN BREMNER Graduated with honours from Sarnia Collegiate Institute. In September he will attend Sheridan College, Oakville in the Illustration Course. Ryan received a Scholarship from Gallery In the Grove, Brights Grove, Lambton County, and also was one of three students In Canada to receive a Scholarship from the Canadian Society for Education Through Art. Congratulations Ryan, from Grandparents, Don & Marilyn McDonald and Bill & Fran Bremner.
