Blyth Mosquitoes end solid season
The Blyth One mosquito soccer
team has finished the season. It was
a very successful year for the coach
and the kids. They won a few, lost
a few and tied some.
In the last half of the season they
played eight games. On June 26
they played against Clinton
Cannibals. Clinton took the lead in
the first half but Blyth came on
strong and scored two quick goals.
The first, scored in a scramble in
front of the net by Cody Anderson
assisted by Sean Bechtel and
Steven VanAmersfoort off a comer
kick. The second again scored by

Clinton scored again to take the
lead once more. Greg Bechtel had
the opportunity to take a penalty
shot after some rough play and
scored. Clinton scored two more
goals to win the game, 5-3.
On July 3 Blyth met Lucknow
Optimists on the home field. Blyth
tried hard but couldn't manage a
goal. Strong defense kept
Lucknow's lead to only three goals.
On July 10 Blyth was matched
against Lucknow Legions. Blyth
had no trouble using their talent to
outplay the opposition. Jamie Ross
got the Blyth team off to a good
start with a goal assisted by Brad
Bouman and Sarah Slotegraaf. G.
Bechtel used his left foot and
tricked the goalie in the second
goal assisted by Ross and
Slotegraaf.
The third goal was picture
perfect, scored by Sabrina
Buffinga, assisted by a cross over
pass by VanAmersfoort and G.
Bechtel.
G. Bechtel scored again assisted
by the other team and Slotegraaf
scored the last goal assisted by G.
Bechtel and Jesse Hakkers. The
final score was Blyth, 5 and
Lucknow, 0.
On July 17 Blyth travelled to
Goderich to play against Goderich
MacDonalds. The teams were
evenly matched and played hard.
G. Bechtel scored assisted by
Candice Bearss and Buffinga.
At half time the score was tied at
one a piece. In the second half
Goderich scored off a penalty shot
but Blyth didn't let themselves get
down and scored another goal to tie
it up, this one again by G. Bechtel
assisted by Buffinga and Ross.
A make-up game against Clinton
Cosmos was played on July 24.
Clinton scored a quick goal but
Blyth didn't get discouraged. Brad
Schmidt scored assisted by
Buffinga and G. Bechtel. A second
goal by Buffinga was assisted by
Bouman. Then a third goal, to
prove that Blyth was the better
team, by G. Bechtel assisted by
Buffinga and Bouman, ended the
game.
An exhibition game on the home
field against Wingham FastFlyers
turned out not to be Blyth's best
game. Blyth scored a goal by
Buffinga assisted by Ross and G.
Bechtel. But Wingham was strong
and didn't give Blyth any room.
