move on
The Brussels Tigers advanced to
the second round of the playoffs by
completing a two-game sweep of
the rival Brussels Bulldogs in Huron
County Fastball League action.
In game one the Dogs opened the
scoring in the top of the first as
Andrew McCutcheon scored Greg
Wheeler with an RBI single. The
Tigers quickly took the lead in their
first at bat as Ken Higgins smacked
a two-run homer to make it 2-1
after one inning.
The Tigers added four runs in the
second on hits by Ron Strome,
Brett Clarkson, Tim Fritz and a
homerun by catcher Murray Pipe.
The Dogs climbed back into the
game scoring one in the third and
three more in the fourth to trail
only 6 - 5. A Pipe double scored
Clarkson in the fourth to make the
final 7-5 in favour of the Tigers.
Pipe was three for four at the plate
with Clarkson reaching base twice
and scoring two runs.
Dave Smith went the distance for
the Dogs striking out 10 Tigers,
while Shawn Conley and Todd
Uhrig shared the duties for the
Tigers fanning seven Bulldogs.
On Friday night game two saw
the Bulldogs once again jump
ahead in their first turn as Shawn
Thompson scored Greg Mulvey
and Wheeler for an early 2-0 lead.
The Dogs' starter kept the Tiger
hitters off balance and carried the
lead into the fourth until Doug
Conley powered a solo homerun to
cut the Bulldog lead to one.
The Tigers took the lead in the
top of the sixth as Uhrig led off
with a homerun and hits by Brian
Neill and Doug Shaw cashed two
more to make the score 4-2.
The Bulldogs scored one in the
sixth and pushed one across in the
seventh to take the game to extra
innings. The game went to the 12th
inning still tied at four, but with
one out Conley singled as did
Strome to put runners on first and
second. Neill cashed both runners
with a single over first base. A
Shaw ground out scored Niell to
put the Tigers ahead to stay 7-4.
Tigers' pitcher Uhrig fanned the
side in the ninth to lockup the
victory.
D. Conley went 4-6 while Neill
and Shaw each reached base on
three occasions.
McCutcheon, Mike Watson and
Dave Smith all saw action on the
hill for the Dogs while Conley and
Uhrig combined to strike out 13
Dogs.

With three divisions taking part in the year-end soccer tournament in Brussels, Aug. 16,
there were dozens of kickers from communities such as Listowel, Howick, Elma, Palmerston
and Brussels in town. A Brussels Under-10 player boots the ball past his Howick opponent
as they competed during the year-end Brussels soccer tournament Saturday.
