HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1997-08-20, Page 9Tigers move on The Brussels Tigers advanced to the second round of the playoffs by completing a two-game sweep of the rival Brussels Bulldogs in Huron County Fastball League action. In game one the Dogs opened the scoring in the top of the first as Andrew McCutcheon scored Greg Wheeler with an RBI single. The Tigers quickly took the lead in their first at bat as Ken Higgins smacked a two-run homer to make it 2-1 after one inning. The Tigers added four runs in the second on hits by Ron Strome, Brett Clarkson, Tim Fritz and a homerun by catcher Murray Pipe. The Dogs climbed back into the game scoring one in the third and three more in the fourth to trail only 6 - 5. A Pipe double scored Clarkson in the fourth to make the final 7-5 in favour of the Tigers. Pipe was three for four at the plate with Clarkson reaching base twice and scoring two runs. Dave Smith went the distance for the Dogs striking out 10 Tigers, while Shawn Conley and Todd Uhrig shared the duties for the Tigers fanning seven Bulldogs. On Friday night game two saw the Bulldogs once again jump ahead in their first turn as Shawn Thompson scored Greg Mulvey and Wheeler for an early 2-0 lead. The Dogs' starter kept the Tiger hitters off balance and carried the lead into the fourth until Doug Conley powered a solo homerun to cut the Bulldog lead to one. The Tigers took the lead in the top of the sixth as Uhrig led off with a homerun and hits by Brian Neill and Doug Shaw cashed two more to make the score 4-2. The Bulldogs scored one in the sixth and pushed one across in the seventh to take the game to extra innings. The game went to the 12th inning still tied at four, but with one out Conley singled as did Strome to put runners on first and second. Neill cashed both runners with a single over first base. A Shaw ground out scored Niell to put the Tigers ahead to stay 7-4. Tigers' pitcher Uhrig fanned the side in the ninth to lockup the victory. D. Conley went 4-6 while Neill and Shaw each reached base on three occasions. McCutcheon, Mike Watson and Dave Smith all saw action on the hill for the Dogs while Conley and Uhrig combined to strike out 13 Dogs. Tykes play There was an amazing score total when Blyth Tykes met Londesboro D, Aug. 5. Londesboro started quickly with a homer, followed by several sin­ gles. Blyth retaliated with singles of their own. Matt Wilson added a homerun in the bottom of the second to increase the run total. Britt Peters contributed to the effort, catching a pop fly and start­ ing a double play in the third. In the fourth, Anthony Peters nabbed a pop fly and got a runner out at third. Britt Peters snagged a pop-up for the final out of the inning. In Blyth's last at-bat, Anthony Peters blasted a homerun, as did Ben Caldwell. Colton Durie added a triple and Justin Ritchie a double. The final score was 29-20 for Londesboro. With three divisions taking part in the year-end soccer tournament in Brussels, Aug. 16, there were dozens of kickers from communities such as Listowel, Howick, Elma, Palmerston and Brussels in town. PeeWees take W0AA series The Belgrave PeeWee boys ball team is being kept very busy with three series on the go. They began WOAA play, Aug. 2 in a best two-out-of-three series against New Hamburg. A great team effort with few errors backed up the strong duo of Justin Campbell on the mound and Myron Hussey behind the plate to take the first game 13-2. With runs scored by Kent Read­ man, Matt Bromley and Craig Marks through the first two, Bel­ grave opened up the game in the third when six runners crossed the plate. Adding to the score were Devin Moffatt, Campbell, Hussey, Curtis Knight, Bromley and Travis Hopper. Held scoreless in the fourth, Bel­ grave struck with two homers in the fifth off the bats of Readman and Marks, Moffatt also scored during the inning. Travis Campbell added a run in the sixth to top off the attack. The teams met again Aug. 4, this time in New Hamburg, though the result was very similar. As before, Belgrave’s big inning came in the third when Moffat (two), Hopper, Kent McPherson, Hussey, Matt Walker, Chad Cook and Travis Campbell crossed the plate. Next weekend, on Saturday, Aug. 23, the senior teams (U-12 to U-18) will be participating in their year-end tournament in the Listowel area. Also, the Brussels year-end potluck banquet and awards night will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Brussels arena. Marks, Hopper, Hussey and Brom­ ley through the other innings, for a final tally of 13-3 for Belgrave. They took the series. The following weekend, they moved onto ORSA play, taking on Baden, Aug. 9. Belgrave was outmatched, going down in two games straight in two days. In spite of good hitting and 10 runs, Belgrave fell 11-10 in the first match up. Runs were scored by Readman (two), Bromley (two), Knight (two), Jason Fear, Justin Campbell and Hussey (two). It was a blow out for Baden in the Sunday game, outblasting Bel­ grave 23-3. Belgrave runs were scored by Marks, Walker and Fear. Aug. 13 brought the squad home for tri-county league play, against Auburn where they nipped their opponent 12-11. Auburn took the early lead, scor­ ing three in the first while only Bromley came home for Belgrave. The defense held off the attack, allowing the offense to gain control in the third. Belgrave took a 4-3 lead off runs by Bromley, Justin Campbell and a Hussey homer. Auburn tied it up in the top of the fourth only to watch Belgrave score two with Hopper and Readman. Down 11-6 through five and a half, Belgrave went ahead with their at-bat.
