Huronlea Happenings
SWAT team visits residents
By Olive Sproul
I must introduce an enjoyable
summer event that started last year
at Huronlea. The program is called
SWAT (Students Working Around
Town). They were here last year,
too. They are mostly 12 to 14-year-
olds, who come to Huronlea every
Tuesday and Thursday morning.
They are so full of energy and the
milk of human kindness that they
hardly know what to do first in
order to be helpful. They love
playing games like checkers and
crokinole. Henry Carter is a great
favourite with them, because he
likes playing those games and is
very skillful and lucky at them.
There is no scarcity of strong
young arms to push the wheelchairs
out around the parking lot.
Some of them play the piano and
sing. They have quite a repertoire
of songs learned at school and
some modem songs that they've
heard on the radio or on TV.
If you can think up an errand
that’s a little out of the ordinary or
least different from the things most
people require you've made a friend
for life. My 'Buddies' R Us Partner',
from two years ago, Ashley Keffer
always comes ninning to me first to
see if she can do something for me.
She can almost read my mind when
she goes on an errand for me. She's
also lit up wwith goodwill
enthusiasm and affection. Indeed
everyone of these young people are
irradiated with affection and
goodwill. It's a great pleasure to be
associated with them I understand
they are working at various jobs at
other locations 'round about the
town. Good work kids, you’re on
the road to good citizenship and are
already an asset and a credit to your
families as well as the community
at large.
Don Dunbar entertained in his
usual breezy, down-home style, on
Wednesday afternoon.
The Gideon hymn-sing monthly
songfest occurred on the next

afternoon following the morning
session of Roman Catholic Mass.
Sundays are notable for their
afternoon church services.
Officiating during July were: Pastor
R. Pat Benaway, Rev. N. Beale,
Rev. C. Johnson, and Lieut.
Pittock. All of these, and a number
of others not on duty this month,
but who have done duty in the past
and will doubtless take their turn in
the future, are remembered
gratefully by the parishioners in
Huronlea.
Likewise in the case of those
faithful pianists and/or organist
who show up and shower us with
music every Saturday afternoon.
Among them are Alice and Mary,
Marion and Karen.
The 200 wing has a number of
activities geared to their needs,
such as: Lively Laundry, art time,
exercises on Wednesday mornings
and a reading group on Friday
mornings. They also play euchre
once in a while and go on their own
mystery tour.
The last week of July saw three
cars and the van set off in a
cavalcade of convoy, bound for the
annual pizza at the beach. This is a
very enjoyable, relaxing time
which we take each year. We
always go during the week, so the
beach is very nearly deserted until
our invading forces descend and
take possession of St. Christopher's
beach. Arriving about lunch time
we got unloaded someone went for
the pizzas while the rest got the
picnic tables set up. We always
bring drinks and dessert in the
picnic hamper and pig out on pizza

as soon as it arrives. Replete, we sit
for an hour watching the blue
expanse of Lake Huron. There is
usually a sailboat or a tanker
somewhere in to look at, and lazily
speculate about.
After a while we get up enough
energy to play word games or walk
up the boardwalk to see what's
doing at the municipal beach or
push or be pushed in the wheelchair
to the same destination. There's a
well-equipped playground there
and it's fun to watch the kids work
out on the jungle gym, or slide
down the long crooked slides.
On the last day of July some of
us went to see the Japanese drum
and bugle band. It was a beautiful
high summer morning so we
decided to walk over, since the
SWAT team was there to help.
We were prompt, but the players
weren't. We waited and we waited.
We waited some more!
Fortunately, there was quite a bit to
observe as they practised stomping
up and down the field practising,
sometimes marching backwards at
a fast, almost running pace carrying
both big bass as well as kettle
drums and meanwhile keeping a
steady pounding beat that was
exciting and made one's heart a
battleground.
Eventually they got around to
putting on a 20-minute concert.
We came home via the sidewalk
on the side street at the top of the
hill just north of the entrance to
Huronlea. It was past 1 o'clock
when we wearily trailed in to our
belated lunch and let the SWAT
team go home.
