It soon became known as "Canada's Largest Travelling Barn Dance." Each year, more than 40,000 people attended the remote broadcasts and another 150,000 listened weekly on the radio. Thompson, who was raised near Listowel, remembers the Barn Dance days from his childhood. When he got the idea to do a play about this local phenomenon, he decided to use the collective process, a style he honed during his Kristen and- . • years with Theatre Passe Muraille directing plays like The Farm Show. Through this collaborative process, the actors do first-hand research, and develop scenes and dialogue through improvisation to create the final product. These actors, many of whom double as musicians, portray such well-known Bam Dance alumni as Ernie King, Earl Heywood, Don and Cora Robertson, Cactus Mac, Doc Cruickshank, Johnny Brent, Ross Mann, Clarke Johnston, Larry Mercey, Al Cherny and a host of others. Back from last year in the various roles are Raoul Bhaneja, Eric Coates, Andrew Dolha, Carolyn Hay, Gary Muir and musical director/fiddler Anne Lederman. Joining them this year are Adam Large and musician E. A.
