Ethel youth develops charity fundraiser By Janice Becker Citizen staff Though the total dollar value may not be considered sizeable, the effort and organization which went into planning a charitable fundraiser was considerable for the young lady from a small community. With less than one week to put together a sandcastle building contest, Kelsey Clary, 12, who lives in Ethel with her parents Tom and Shannon Clary and brother, Gregory, registered eight families to participate. The generosity of the residents and thoughtfulness of Kelsey resulted in a small donation, resulting from the entry fees, going to the Canadian Cancer Society. After soliciting the participants, Kelsey asked each if they would allow her to donate the entry fee to the society. Each family agreed. However, the sandcastle builders were also rewarded for their efforts. Kelsey went to neighbours and businesses asking for donations for a first prize. To her surprise, she not only received a first place award, but gifts for the co-winner, second, third and a consolation prize for all entrants. But just where does a 12-year-old get the idea to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society. A little shy in promoting her own good deed, mother Shannon says, Kelsey has had a lot of people in her life die from cancer, particularly one aunt to Building castles family activity The Boyer children, from left, Michael, Christine, Lynn and Steven, along with parents, Gary and Brenda, worked together to build a large entry for the Ethel castle building contest. When asked why she chose to fundraise with a castle building contest, Kelsey just smiles and says, "I thought it would be fun." Actually, the idea was first discussed some two years ago when Kelsey and other neighbourhood children joked about holding a contest. Then, six days before the July 31 judging of the sculptures, Kelsey awoke early one morning and simply decided to put the plan into operation. She quickly drew up advertising posters, before the rest of the family had risen, then went to a neighbour for assistance in printing the posters on a computer. By Friday afternoon, Ethel was covered with posters and Kelsey was going door-to-door, personally asking families to get involved. Co-winner Jennifer Kular says she decided to enter because she thought it would be a lot of fun and a great way to meet people in a community she had only recently moved to. Kular included her love of shells into her creation, adorning each turret and roof-top with pieces from her unique collection. Kular also donated a prize for the contest. For the Boyer family, who tied for first, building castles is something they have done for years, says mom Brenda. With a little help from Brenda and husband, Gary, the four Boyer children, Steven, Michael, Christine and Lynn, built a large castle with moat and running water beneath their playhouse. Other donations from the contest came from Kelsey's mom, Glen Farms, Brenda McKinnon and Brussels IGA. Isabel Pearson of Ethel judged the entries. As for the young fundraiser, she says she plans to make the contest an annual event. "It went very well and all the (sculptures) were really good," says Kelsey. " I would like to thank everyone who entered. Kelsey is on her way to becoming a great fundraiser as only one day after the event she had already written several thank you letters to the participants.
