Blyth gets laundromat in converted shed Cleaning up Blyth entrepreneur Steve Bearss recently opened a laundromat on Westmoreland Street, and two one- bedroom apartments will soon be finished at the back of the building. The Bearss children, Brandy, left, Candy, centre, Mandy and Wyatt, in front, stand on the shaded porch. By Janice Becker Citizen staff , From a work shed used only for the storage of construction equip ment to a modem apartment set-up and much-needed business, Steve Bearss of Blyth took a building on Westmoreland Street and converted it to an up-to-date laundromat and two one-bedroom apartments. The building was no longer of use for storage as it was too small for Bearss’ needs, he says, and after five years on the market, he decide to renovate the structure. The first step was to create a laundromat at the north end of the building which faces Westmore land. Though the room is compact, it easily houses three washers, including a heavy duty machine for big loads, and two dryers. For the pleasure of those using the facility, Bearss has included a radio and has installed four deck chairs on the porch, a perfect place to sit and watch the world go by on a warm summer day. Because the laundromat is open 24 hours a day, during the summer months, Bearss has taken some security precautions. Security lights have been installed, the chairs are bolted to the deck and, the best vandal inhibitor, great neighbours keep an eye on the business to ensure there is no loitering or mis chief, he says. The second phase of the project which was completed by early August, was the construction of two apartments which face west. Each unit is a one-bedroom, wheelchair- accessible apartment with an open concept kitchen, livin groom and dining area. The wash rooms have been constructed large enough to accommodate wheel chairs and because they are at ground level a ramp can quickly be installed for a new resident. The need for new apartments was very apparent, says Bearss. “As soon as my intention for apartments was mentioned in Blyth council (briefs) in The Citizen, I got a phone call asking for one of the units.” The second apartment was also rented long before construction was completed. Wineberry Apartments are locat ed at 107 Westmoreland Street, Blyth. PUPS FOR SALE Purebred black Lab. The squad got off to a quick start and never let up. After loading the bases in the first, Matt Wilson clobbered the ball for a grand slam. A second homer was tagged by Kendall Whitfield, which scored two. Katie McClinchey had hit a triple. Taking to the field in the bottom of the inning McClinchey earned two outs at first base. Extra base hits came off the bats of Nicholas Dale (homer), Wilson (homer) and Ashley Cook (triple) in the second. Katie Stryker was the key in the second inning as she got two out at second. The hits kept coming for Blyth when Whitfield opened the third with a homerun followed by singles to set up a grand slam for Wilson. First base player Erin Moore was instrumental in two outs in the third, one when she caught a throw from Wilson and the second she snagged herself. Batting in the fourth, Adam deBoer added a homer to the tally. Justin Ritchie made a nice play at second to earn an out during Clin ton's last at bat. The final score was 29-7 for Blyth.
