After the last two years, the
needs of all food banks have
greatly increased from 25 per cent
goods, more specifically goods
controlled under the Pest Control
Products Act. The investigation by
the Department was initiated after a
shipment of smuggled pesticides,
which were not registered for use in
Canada, was seized from Bradley

shipment of pesticides, valued at

shipment to Erb and his company.
Martin, for his part in the April
1994 seizure, was convicted on
three counts under the Customs Act,
in Ontario Provincial Court in
Sarnia on May 21, 1996. Judge
Eddy sentenced Martin on Sept. 26,
1996, to a total of $4,000 or 72
days in jail.
He was also convicted on Sept.
26, on two counts under the
Customs Act, arising from a June

pesticides at the Bluewater Bridge

a total of $500 or 10 days in jail.
Revenue Canada will continue to
prosecute those who contravene the
Customs Act and related legislation
that Customs administers in whole
or in part, and puts honest
Canadian businesses at a
competitive disadvantage.
Home needed for exchange students
An urgent appeal to the
community for volunteer host
families is being issued by Youth
For Understanding Canada. There
are still eight exchange students,
four girls and four boys waiting to
hear if they will have the
opportunity to come to Canada for
a year to study and learn first hand
what it is like to live in a new
culture.
The students are from Finland,
Denmark, Germany, Australia and
Ecuador, all speak English and are
between the ages of 15 and 18. All
of them are excellent students and
have a variety of interests in sports,
music and academic studies.
All the students are ambassadors
chosen by their countries and eager
to learn about Canada, said Co
ordinator Diane Hahn.
Host families are volunteers who
are willing to share their home and
their heart with one of these
students for 11 months by
providing them with a room and
meals and the companionship of
their family and friends. Hahn said,
