The Citizen, 1997-07-30, Page 8PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 1997 Pre-Mites lose to tough Fordivich team Powerful bats were tough on the Brussels PreMites when they trav elled to Fordwich, July 16. Brussels started well, earning three runs in the first with singles by Meagan Keffer, Bradley Que senberry, Christopher Becker, Cody Subject, Brianne Wheeler and Andrew Lindsay. RBIs went to Becker, Wheeler and Lindsay. Fordwich retaliated with three homers in the bottom of the first, to even the score. The Brussels attack was halted for the next two innings when sin gles by Becker and Subject, in the third, and Wheeler and Lindsay, in the fourth, could not be brought home. Through the middle innings, Fordwich smashed six homers, pushing nine runs across. Brussels made a comeback attempt in the final at-bat when Quesenberry started a string of sin gles in the inning , followed by Becker, Subject, Jill Bridge and Wheeler. Wheeler earned two RBIs, Bridge tallied one and Dustin Lichti added an RBI with a sacri fice bunt. Brussels pulled to within five runs, but Fordwich did not let up in the bottom of the inning, taking eight more runs for a 20-7 win. Though the score would not indi cate such, the defense for the Brus sels PreMites was the best it has been all season for the final regular season game, July 24, against Gowans town. Behind early after a six-run attack by the visitors, good defen sive plays were made by Lindsay as he stopped a grounder from reach ing the outfield. A nice throw from Subject to Bridge at first narrowly missed earning an out. Quesenberry was also pumped as he stopped a grounder rolling past the pitcher and attempted a throw to first. Singles tapped by Wheeler, Justin Pipe, Subject and Quesen berry did not result in a first inning run for the squad as Wheeler was forced out at second on a fielder's choice. Gowanstown would not let up scoring an additional 15 through the next three innings, though held to only one in the fourth. Becker led off Brussels' second with a double, moved to third on a single by Keffer before being sent home with a Wheeler single. Brussels added one more in the third when Subject, Bridge, Que senberry and Becker singled. Que senberry took the RBI. In spite of a great double by Bridge in the fourth, Brussels had Brussels ties Atwood It was a tight one all the way, when the Brussels and Atwood PeeWee Boys teams met July 4 in Brussels. Pitcher Matthew Kroll met five batters in the first inning. A toss to first baseman Andrew Garland resulted in the first out, with an infield fly and a strikeout, shutting down the visitors. In the home half, Kroll and Tim Harrison got aboard with walks. Then Matt McCall's single to score Kroll was the only run for the home team. The inning ended quickly when a tough low pop fly and some fast starts off the bags helped Atwood turn a triple play. After a second inning strikeout, Kroll gave up a walk, which came Continued on page 9 to settle for a total of two runs, going down 21-2. After playing the full season at first, things clicked for Bridge as she tagged three outs through the game. The skill of stopping grounders has also improved as Lindsay and Becker combined to slow a runner in the third. In two great plays by the Brus sels second baseman, Pipe earned the final two outs of the fourth when he snagged grounders and got the force outs. The squad travelled to Wingham, July 26, for a year-end tournament against teams from Ethel, Belgrave, Gowanstown, Wingham, Fordwich and Belmore. Though Brussels did not fare well, losing both matches, there were good individual efforts by the players. In the first game against Blue vale, Brussels was shut out through the first three innings with singles earned by Lindsay (two), Wheeler, Quesenberry, and Bridge. Several players made good contact with the ball, but a strong first base player for Bluevale caught tosses for quick outs. Brussels defense could not hold off the opponent, allowing 16 runs through three, including three homers and two triples. The team finally got on the board in the fourth when an Ashley Sholdice single was followed by a sacrifice by Lichti and a single by Pipe to bring her home. The defense picked up in the final at-bat for Bluevale when Que senberry and Keffer grabbed grounders with Keffer earning an out at second. The final was 22-1. The battle against Wingham brought out the sluggers for both squads. Wingham jumped to an early lead scoring 15 in the first two, while Brussels tallied three. Sean Slater had the best game of his season, tapping a single to lead off the inning as well as a double in PROUDLY INVOLVED WITH BRUSSELS HOMECOMING 97 in the fourth. Keffer smashed a homerun to bring in two RBIs. A single by Wheeler, a double by Lindsay and a sacrifice by Becker pushed Brussels' only run of the second inning across the plate. After nine Wingham runs in the third, Brussels’ offense kicked into gear, racking up six runs off a triple from Lichti, doubles from Keffer and Bridge and singles by Subject, Quesenberry, Pipe, Sholdice, PeeWees finish first Another win put Hullett PeeWee Girls in first place to end the sea son. The team hosted Goderich II, July 28 for a 16-6 victory. The offense was highlighted by a Tif Reinhart grand slam in the fourth inning. Hullett pitchers Reinhart, Jody Godfrey and Leanne Jamieson shut out their opponents in four of five innings played with all Goderich runs scored in the fourth.
