THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 30,1997 PAGE 7. ports Back-to-back wins for Brussels Tigers It was looking good for the Blyth Bantams as the Goderich player and the ball raced for the third baseman. Unfortunately, the opposition won this close one. The two teams met in Blyth in regular season play, July 21. Brussels Bs beat Acre Ts After losing their first two matchups, Brussels B finally came through with a victory against the other Brussels team, Acre T. The game ended with a 7-2 score. Acre T started the game shorthanded, but held out a strong defense. It was 15 minutes into the first half when Brussels B player, Kirk Baillie, scored the first goal. Adam Carr's aggressive play paid off with Brussels B's second goal. Acre T remained in the game however. Jen Terpstra passed the ball just on the inside of the goal area, and with a long hard shot aimed the ball in and over Brussels B goalie Richard Armstrong. Brussels B soon came back with Bulldogs rocky against Brewers Tuesday night the Brussels Bulldogs travelled to Walton to take on the Brewers in the Huron County Fastball League. The Bulldogs got off to a rocky start with the Brewers Jeff Robinson, Steve Knight, Bill Shortreed, John Huether and Mark McNichol all crossing the plate to give them a five-run lead. The Bulldogs troubles didn't stop there as the Brewers scored four more runs over the next four innings. Mike Nolan scored twice, while Mark McNichol and Bob Steiss also scored. The sixth inning was the only bright spot for the Bulldogs. Andrew McCutcheon, Shawn Thompson, Brian McArter, Dave Smith and Bruce Johnston all scored. Greg Mulvey hit a three-run homerun over the centre field fence. With the score at 9 -6 the Bulldogs hoped to upset the another strong shot by Terry Brown. The Brussels B defensive line, Melissa Evans and Bronwyn Dunbar were strong and managed to hold out Acre T’s forwards Robert Terpstra, Jason Kellington and Jen Terpstra. Back into the second half, Brussels B started their winning streak with another strong goal from Carr. After moving the ball swiftly up the field, Acre T goalkeeper, Corey Campbell, was not able to control the hard shot. Acre T kept pressing, and soon after Brussels B was hit with a penalty shot. The Acre T shooter aimed low towards the right comer, Brewers, but the Brewers stopped the Bulldog charge. Rick McDonald and Huether scored for the Brewers in the bottom of the sixth. The Bulldogs' McArter scored the only run in the seventh. The Brewers look the win 11-7. Smith and Dean Rutledge went three for four at the plate. Brewer Bob Steiss had four RBI's for the Belgrave PeeWees win series The Belgrave PeeWee Boys are beginning Ontario Rural Softball Association play with two wins over Seaforth. The first game, in Belgrave, July 21, was a 19-12 victory for the home team. It looked tight in the first with Seaforth scoring five to Belgrave's four. Running home were Devin Moffatt, Craig Marks, Justin Campbell and Myron Hussey. It got a little scary in the second a shot which not even goalie Richard Armstrong had a chance against. Driving a long hard shot from a comer kick, Andrew Exel slipped the ball into the top left comer of the Acre T net. Not wanting to give up scoring opportunities. Brussels B moved the ball back into the Acre T end. Campbell, still in net, was caught too far out of his area and Kirk Baillie beat him to the ball and knocked it into the net! Rolk Freschknecht took a long hard shot from the inner part of the goal area and put the ball in past Acre T*s goalie Mike Albers. The game ended with Brussels B defeating the Acre T team, the first game lost in game play for Acre T. night as well as pitching six innings. McDonald finished off the game pitching the seventh inning, scoring two strikeouts. Smith started for the Bulldogs, and was relieved by Andrew McCutcheon. The Bulldogs played Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Brussels Fastball Tournament. when Seaforth brought their score to 10, while Chad Cook was the only Belgrave runner to cross the plate. The hosts didn't give up, howev­ er, and shut out their visitors in the third, then scored Hussey and Matt Bromley to narrow the lead. A two-run Seaforth fourth widened the gap once again, but the Belgrave offense proved they meant business. Moffatt, Marks, Continued on page 9 The Brussels Tigers continued their fine play as they scored back- to-back shutouts over Seaforth and the Brussels Bulldogs to run their record to nine wins and six losses. On Friday the Tigers scored four first-inning runs and cruised to a 9- 0 blasting of Seaforth Plumbing and Heating. Tim Fritz led off the first with a base on balls and was promptly cashed on a Ken Higgins homerun. A Shawn Conley triple was then plated by a Murray Pipe single. Pipe scored moments later on a Brett Clarkson ground out. The home side added two more runs in the third on hits by Pipe and Brian Neill and a Clarkson RBI. The Tigers capped the scoring in the fourth by adding three more runs as Higgins, Pipe and Conley all collected RBI hits. Pipe and Higgins each were a perfect three for three with two runs scored. Conley handled the mound duties for the Tigers allowing one hit and striking out 11. On Sunday the Tigers played Squirt Girls win, lose The Belgrave Squirt Girls won one and lost one last week in con­ tests against Ethel and Walton. On July 21, Belgrave's short- staffed team was hurt by an auto­ matic out for the ninth batter. A strong inning for Ethel put them up 3-0 in the first. Belgrave answered by shutting them down in the second and scoring six. Cross­ ing the plate for Belgrave were Emily Eslton, Michelle Nixon, Kenni Hopt, Nicole Procter, Michelle Cook and Erin Sanders. Ethel poured it on again in the third with four runs, while Cook was the only Belgrave runner get­ ting to home plate. Ethel kept on hitting notching another five in the fourth, while Kerri Meier and Hopf pul the Bel­ Unscramble each word and place one letter in each zlksguare. A flock of 2000 RUBBER DUCKS 97-07-30 host to the Bulldogs in the first men's fastball game at the new arena park. Once again the Tigers got on the board in their half of the first counting four runs. A Fritz walk, a Higgins double and a Todd Uhrig sac fly produced the first Tiger run. Ron Strome's inside the park homerun chased home Higgins. Steve Fritz rounded out the first inning scoring with a homerun. The Tigers counted two more in the second on RBI hits by Strome and Uhrig. Dave Smith replaced Andrew McCutcheon on the hill for the Dogs and with the aid of some nice defence held the Tigers at bay the rest of the way. Higgins was three for four at the plated, with Strome and Doug Shaw enjoying two hits apiece. Uhrig went all the way for the Tigers fanning nine Dogs. The Tigers finished the regular schedule with a game in Zurich on Monday night, and will be in action Friday night as part of the Tigers Fastball Tournament for Homecoming weekend. grave team up two more. Walton started the game with seven runs, then Belgrave notched four scored by Charlene Bromley, Meier, Hopf and Procter. Walton kept the pressure on in the second with another seven crossing the plate. Belgrave was not deterred, however, and added seven of their own to bring the team within three. Nixon, Brom­ ley, Meier, Hopf, Procter, Sherri Ross and Cook scored. In the third, Belgrave's defense played well keeping the team to two. Then offensively they finished the job scoring the same seven.
