Back-to-back wins
for Brussels Tigers
It was looking good for the Blyth Bantams as the Goderich player and the ball raced for the
third baseman. Unfortunately, the opposition won this close one. The two teams met in Blyth
in regular season play, July 21.
Brussels Bs beat Acre Ts
After losing their first two
matchups, Brussels B finally came
through with a victory against the
other Brussels team, Acre T. The
game ended with a 7-2 score.
Acre T started the game
shorthanded, but held out a strong
defense. It was 15 minutes into the
first half when Brussels B player,
Kirk Baillie, scored the first goal.
Adam Carr's aggressive play paid
off with Brussels B's second goal.
Acre T remained in the game
however. Jen Terpstra passed the
ball just on the inside of the goal
area, and with a long hard shot
aimed the ball in and over Brussels
B goalie Richard Armstrong.

Bulldogs rocky against Brewers
Tuesday night the Brussels
Bulldogs travelled to Walton to
take on the Brewers in the Huron
County Fastball League.
The Bulldogs got off to a rocky
start with the Brewers Jeff
Robinson, Steve Knight, Bill
Shortreed, John Huether and Mark
McNichol all crossing the plate to
give them a five-run lead.
The Bulldogs troubles didn't stop
there as the Brewers scored four
more runs over the next four
innings. Mike Nolan scored twice,
while Mark McNichol and Bob
Steiss also scored.
The sixth inning was the only
bright spot for the Bulldogs.
Andrew McCutcheon, Shawn
Thompson, Brian McArter, Dave
Smith and Bruce Johnston all
scored. Greg Mulvey hit a three-run
homerun over the centre field
fence.
With the score at 9 -6 the
Bulldogs hoped to upset the
another strong shot by Terry
Brown.
The Brussels B defensive line,
Melissa Evans and Bronwyn
Dunbar were strong and managed
to hold out Acre T’s forwards
Robert Terpstra, Jason Kellington
and Jen Terpstra.
Back into the second half,
Brussels B started their winning
streak with another strong goal
from Carr. After moving the ball
swiftly up the field, Acre T
goalkeeper, Corey Campbell, was
not able to control the hard shot.
Acre T kept pressing, and soon
after Brussels B was hit with a
penalty shot. The Acre T shooter
aimed low towards the right comer,
Brewers, but the Brewers stopped
the Bulldog charge. Rick
McDonald and Huether scored for
the Brewers in the bottom of the
sixth. The Bulldogs' McArter
scored the only run in the seventh.

Smith and Dean Rutledge went
three for four at the plate. Brewer

Belgrave PeeWees win series
The Belgrave PeeWee Boys are
beginning Ontario Rural Softball
Association play with two wins
over Seaforth.
The first game, in Belgrave, July
21, was a 19-12 victory for the
home team. It looked tight in the
first with Seaforth scoring five to
Belgrave's four. Running home
were Devin Moffatt, Craig Marks,
Justin Campbell and Myron
Hussey.
It got a little scary in the second
a shot which not even goalie
Richard Armstrong had a chance
against.
Driving a long hard shot from a
comer kick, Andrew Exel slipped
the ball into the top left comer of
the Acre T net. Not wanting to give
up scoring opportunities. Brussels
B moved the ball back into the
Acre T end. Campbell, still in net,
was caught too far out of his area
and Kirk Baillie beat him to the
ball and knocked it into the net!
Rolk Freschknecht took a long hard
shot from the inner part of the goal
area and put the ball in past Acre

when Seaforth brought their score
to 10, while Chad Cook was the
only Belgrave runner to cross the
plate.
The hosts didn't give up, howev

third, then scored Hussey and Matt
Bromley to narrow the lead.
A two-run Seaforth fourth
widened the gap once again, but the
Belgrave offense proved they
meant business. Moffatt, Marks,

The Brussels Tigers continued
their fine play as they scored back-
to-back shutouts over Seaforth and
the Brussels Bulldogs to run their
record to nine wins and six losses.
On Friday the Tigers scored four
first-inning runs and cruised to a 9-
0 blasting of Seaforth Plumbing
and Heating. Tim Fritz led off the
first with a base on balls and was
promptly cashed on a Ken Higgins
homerun. A Shawn Conley triple
was then plated by a Murray Pipe
single. Pipe scored moments later
on a Brett Clarkson ground out.
The home side added two more
runs in the third on hits by Pipe and
Brian Neill and a Clarkson RBI.
The Tigers capped the scoring in
the fourth by adding three more
runs as Higgins, Pipe and Conley
all collected RBI hits.
Pipe and Higgins each were a
perfect three for three with two
runs scored. Conley handled the
mound duties for the Tigers
allowing one hit and striking out

Ron Strome's inside the park
homerun chased home Higgins.
Steve Fritz rounded out the first
inning scoring with a homerun.
The Tigers counted two more in
the second on RBI hits by Strome
and Uhrig. Dave Smith replaced
Andrew McCutcheon on the hill for
the Dogs and with the aid of some
nice defence held the Tigers at bay
the rest of the way.
Higgins was three for four at the

The final score was 12-9 for
Ethel.
There was plenty of back and
forth action against Walton, July
24. Walton started the game with
seven runs, then Belgrave notched
four scored by Charlene Bromley,
Meier, Hopf and Procter.
Walton kept the pressure on in
the second with another seven
crossing the plate. Belgrave was
not deterred, however, and added
seven of their own to bring the
team within three. Nixon, Brom
ley, Meier, Hopf, Procter, Sherri
Ross and Cook scored.
In the third, Belgrave's defense
played well keeping the team to
two. Then offensively they finished
the job scoring the same seven.
